Survey: What is everyone doing for availability?

Hi Robert,

We are a 2-tier site, using Vision HA to mirror our production system.
Production is 830 8-way, backup system is 740 12-way. Both systems use
RAID-5 with ASP2 mirrored for journal receivers. We are a 24x7 company, so
system availability is important to us. The HA setup delivers 2 ways.

Firstly, should the production system fail, we have the ability to role-swap
to the backup system. We have tested this (we still perform the swap
manually) and can have SAP up and running on the backup system inside 15
minutes.

Secondly, we can perform full backups to tape each day (night?) from the
backup server. We suspend SAP database activity (DSCR3SYS), change journal
receivers to establish a sync point, then using a feature of Vision, submit
the backup to tape (BRMS) from the production system to run on the backup
system, before resuming SAP activity (RCNR3SYS). The entire process takes
about 5 minutes, during which time R/3 users see an hourglass if they try
and do anything.

The Vision product uses journal entries to inform the backup system what to
do, so the "remote command" facility allows us to submit the backup to tape
using BRMS from the source system immediately following the change journal.
While we are yet to have to recover from a failure using one of these tapes,
we have created new R/3 instances from them, so can attest to their
reliability.

Hi Everyone,

Please don't complain that this is the same query as the H/A postings
that went on recently!!! It is different!!!

Our management wants us to prepare a number of different
availability/recovery scenarios and the relative expense of each. We are
not seeking just 7/24 solutions, but we are analyzing the whole
continuum of availability from just RAID5 DB with RAID1 journaling, on
up to full blown 7/24 availability. Our management wants us to prepare
a number of different availability/recovery scenarios and the relative
expense of each.

So please drop a line and let us know what you are doing in this regard
and what your opinion of it is.

By the way, a belated thank you to everyone who responded to our inquiry
regarding the different options for our OSS connection. We are going
with frame relay because we require the uptime and bandwith. We were
also concerned about SAP getting on the system at odd hours. Thanks!!!
