SAP Logistics Management (LGM): Mastering Complex Warehouse Logistics Easily

Mainstream support for SAP LE-TRA will expire in 2030. Many companies are therefore currently having to look for a successor. Until now, the standard solution has been: SAP TM. But the system is complex. With SAP Logistics Management (LGM), SAP now provides a much more compact and, in many cases, equally convincing alternative. We explain what makes SAP LGM stand out, for which companies the application can make sense, and in which direction the roadmap is pointing.


What is SAP Logistics Management (LGM)?

SAP Logistics Management (LGM) is a SaaS solution on the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) that brings together warehouse management and transport planning in one system. From the 3rd quarter of 2026, it will also be able to be used as a stand-alone application for transport planning.

SAP LGM has been available exclusively to SAP Private Cloud and on-premise systems customers since spring 2026.


New opportunities through SAP LGM – these companies benefit

In our view, SAP LGM is a promising alternative for companies with small to medium-sized warehouses, satellite locations and less complex transport processes. Here, individual IM solutions, Excel lists or service providers (3PL) are still often used because existing SAP tools are too complex. For these scenarios, SAP LGM is a clear improvement.

SAP is currently developing the product at high speed. New APIs and process options are being added on a weekly basis.

A great opportunity for the application is the planned stand-alone capability of the transport functions. For companies, this means that they can combine their systems in such a way that they meet the exact requirements of the departments. For example, if you need sophisticated warehouse logistics, you can implement this with SAP EWM, but at the same time control transports in a lean and tailor-made way via SAP LGM.


What warehouse functions does SAP LGM currently offer?

For companies with medium requirements, SAP LGM is a valid alternative to SAP TM. In warehouse organization, the application can also be a serious alternative to SAP EWM for these companies as early as autumn 2026 at the current pace of further development. Because then, among other things, three central functions are to be implemented:

 

  • Handling Unit & Batch Management: Full integration of handling units (packing in incoming goods and in the warehouse) and batch management.
  • Production integration: From Q3 2026, production supply will be supported with component consumption and receipt of manufactured materials.
  • Modern API strategy: SAP plans to publish APIs for creating and acknowledging warehouse tasks. This makes it possible to develop your own apps or connect subsystems cleanly.

The architecture of SAP LGM

As an application on SAP BTP, SAP LGM follows the principle of clean core, unlike classic WM or TM scenarios. The operational logistics processes are outsourced in a targeted manner.

Technically, this means, for example, that a storage location in S/4HANA is made “LGM-mandatory”. Deliveries and logistical processes for this area are handled exclusively by the LGM. Anyone who has already implemented EWM or 3PL integrations will recognize many concepts.

A special feature of the data supply: Unlike in many classic SAP integrations, S/4HANA does not actively trigger the data. Instead, the LGM retrieves master data such as products, business partners or orders per job from the ERP system. This pull principle seems unusual at first, but it fits very well with the cloud architecture of the system.

SAP is also showing new approaches to customizing. Certain organizational settings or units of measure are currently maintained via Excel upload. This seems simple at first glance, but it significantly accelerates many processes in early project phases.


How do inbound and outbound processes work in SAP LGM?

Both the put-away and outgoing goods processes are organized in the system in a stringent and surprisingly practical way.

Inbound: Focus on consistency

In inbound, the process in SAP LGM begins with the order: The LGM actively replicates the relevant data from the S/4HANA system and generates an “inbound warehouse request” from it, which functionally corresponds to the classic delivery. Goods receipt, unloading and direct feedback to S/4HANA then take place. This means that users do not have to book goods receipt directly in S/4HANA in advance.

A commercial inspection has also been newly integrated to confirm the completeness and integrity of the goods. The actual storage has so far been quite simple: warehouse tasks have to be created and confirmed manually. This makes it clear that the product still has functional gaps. However, the range of functions is usually sufficient for simple, small storage structures – especially since the reduced complexity can also be seen as an advantage.

Outbound: Flexible process logic instead of rigid processes

When it comes to outgoing goods, users can expect an innovative approach. The system works with process variants: As soon as a delivery enters the system, the process is divided:

  • Warehouse request for warehouse activities (picking, packing, provisioning)
  • Transportation Request for Planning (Who Goes Where and When?)

The system decides based on rules that allow companies to flexibly determine the order in which the process is executed. In doing so, it takes into account more than 20 criteria such as transport routes, weight or destination region. Two variants are possible:

Process variant A: First plan, then pick

The freight forwarder must first confirm that he is sending the truck. Then the process begins in the warehouse. In this way, space is not unnecessarily reserved at the ramp for goods that are not transported away until days later.

Process variant B: First pick, then assign 

If a driver comes at the same time every day anyway, the outgoing goods can already be prepared. The assignment takes place when the truck comes.

The so-called Pickup / Delivery Document (PPD) bundles several deliveries and handling units into one loading and thus controls the actual shipping process. Depending on the selected process variant, the LGM links the delivery before or after the warehouse process with the PPD. The flexible separation between planning and operational execution has been thoughtfully implemented in SAP LGM.


Shipping Optimization: Integrating SAP LGM with AEB Carrier Cloud

SAP LGM is lean, but can be expanded in many ways via interfaces. To ensure that shipping seamlessly connects to outgoing goods, AEB’s Carrier Cloud, for example, can be connected. consolut has implemented a demo project for this purpose. With the help of the integration, parcels to be sent can be processed directly from the LGM.

After users have initiated label printing in SAP LGM, the shipping information is automatically transmitted to the selected carrier via the interface. Companies can choose from more than 300 freight forwarders and parcel service providers.


Conclusion: SAP LGM as a building block of modern logistics architectures

For highly complex transport networks and international logistics environments, SAP LGM is not a  replacement for SAP EWM or SAP TM, but an addition to the SAP portfolio. However, SAP LGM provides many medium-sized companies with a real alternative to classic solutions: functionally sufficiently deep, architecturally modern and without the complexity of a comprehensive enterprise setup.

LGM reflects a general development in corporate IT: The journey is moving away from monolithic one-size-fits-all solutions to modular, tailor-made architectures. As a cloud-native application, LGM can be easily integrated into hybrid or cloud-only infrastructures and scaled as needed. Medium-sized companies should keep a close eye on the releases of the next few months. With the growing range of functions, a change is worthwhile for more and more organizations – not only with a view to the end of SAP LE-TRA.
