SAP Cloud ERP Private –
Modernizing Proven Processes
Building on what works, unlocking innovation: With SAP Cloud ERP Private, companies can continue to run established processes and custom extensions while benefiting from the advantages of a cloud operating model. The solution offers a high degree of flexibility and control over the pace of innovation, creating a future‑ready ERP platform that purposefully combines stability with continuous advancement.
SAP Cloud ERP Private – individual and flexible
SAP Cloud ERP Private (formerly SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition) is designed for organizations that require a high degree of flexibility to meet individual requirements as part of their cloud transformation. The solution enables a phased migration to the cloud at a self‑determined pace, following a clearly structured transformation methodology.
SAP Cloud ERP Private brings the proven capabilities of an SAP S/4HANA on‑premises system into a modern cloud operating model, offering maximum flexibility with predictable costs. Existing investments, custom developments, and extensions can continue to be leveraged. Software, operations, and support are provided from a single source and governed by standardized SLAs.
Maximum flexibility
Benefit from SAP best‑practice processes while still retaining individual configuration options. The private cloud allows for both greenfield and brownfield approaches and supports company‑specific requirements.
Cloud operations delivered from a single source
Infrastructure, operations, and services are bundled within a single cloud model. Companies benefit from a clearly defined operating foundation that includes maintenance, updates, and full technical responsibility.
Preserve and develop
Existing processes, data, and customizations are preserved, allowing current system landscapes to continue to be used while modernization is carried out step by step.
With RISE with SAP into the Private Cloud
RISE with SAP supports the move to SAP Cloud ERP Private through a comprehensive service package. It is designed for organizations that require extensive customization of their business processes, want to migrate their existing SAP landscape to the cloud with minimal change, or need to address complex, industry‑specific requirements. RISE primarily supports existing SAP customers with on‑premises ERP systems on their journey to the cloud. Like GROW, RISE is offered as a transformation‑as‑a‑service model.
In addition to the ERP system, the package includes usage rights for SAP BTP, Business Process Intelligence tools, and the SAP Business Network, which improves collaboration across the supply chain. A range of additional tools for data migration, system conversion, and development simplifies both implementation and ongoing operations.
A key element of the RISE package is the included transformation methodology based on SAP best practices. Unlike GROW, however, SAP does not take full responsibility for ERP implementation. SAP provides the technical infrastructure via the selected hosting partner, while process design, data migration, customizations and extensions, as well as training, must be organized by the customer. In this context, working with an experienced SAP partner is strongly recommended.
After go‑live, SAP is responsible for the core technical operations, system monitoring, and the provision of updates and upgrades. At the same time, companies retain greater control options, for example over release cycles.
Questions about the right way to the cloud?
Successfully managing RISE with SAP
- Complexity is often underestimated: Compared to traditional migrations, RISE projects offer a more direct path, but they are not a sprint. Leverage SAP’s clearly defined transformation roadmap, work with milestones, and engage SAP experts for support with preparatory activities.
- Unclear role definition: Unlike GROW, RISE is not an all‑inclusive package. Project teams typically consist of SAP, an SAP partner, and the customer’s internal team. To ensure effective collaboration, transparent SLAs are essential.

F & Q
Which companies is SAP Cloud ERP Private suitable for?
SAP Cloud ERP Private is particularly well suited for companies with complex or industry‑specific requirements that need extensive process customization and system extensions. Organizations can implement the highest security standards and manage their own release cycles.
What is the difference between SAP Cloud ERP Private and the Public Edition?
Companies can pursue either a greenfield approach (new implementation) or a brownfield approach (system conversion).
A hybrid approach combining elements of both methods may also be appropriate. Since RISE with SAP is a comprehensive transformation package combining technology and services, an SAP partner supports you in both strategic planning and technical implementation.
How do updates work, and how flexible are they?
Updates in SAP Cloud ERP Private can be planned flexibly. Unlike SAP Cloud ERP, there are no fixed quarterly update cycles. Instead, companies can individually coordinate the timing and scope of updates with SAP or the operating hyperscaler. This makes it easier to align upgrade windows with change and release planning and to account for complex, custom extensions.
Who is responsible for operation, safety, and maintenance?
Responsibility for operations, security, and maintenance of SAP Cloud ERP Private is shared between the customer, SAP, and—if applicable—the hyperscaler. Customers retain significantly more control than in the public cloud, while SAP and/or the hyperscaler take on core technical responsibilities such as hosting, infrastructure security, and basic system operations. This model combines maximum flexibility for customer‑specific adaptations with professionally managed cloud services.
