Disk Utilization is affected by database reads and writes, system paging, retries, seek lengths, data fragmentation, buffer over and under runs, purge option, and the NBRRCDS parameter (OVRDBF command). Note that a dedicated batch job may cause high disk utilization, which is acceptable.
Refer to other messages for information regarding which factors were found to be contributing to the high utilization found in this sample data. For more information about RGZPFM and OVRDBF commands, see the Programming topic in the iSeries Information Center at the Web site: http://www.ibm.com/eserver/iseries/infocenter.
Changes made to improve performance are best made on a system with 'tuned' system pool paging rates. If the Advisor has made pool tuning recommendations, do those first and reanalyze your work load. If utilization is still high, refer to the specific messages for possible causes and solutions. To investigate the objects a disk unit uses, use the Start Performance Explorer (STRPEX) command.
If you cannot reduce the utilization by tuning, changing the work load, or by distributing highly used objects across other disk units, you may need to add more disk drives. You can use the Performance Tools historical data to analyze the disk utilization trend (CRTHSTDTA, DSPHSTGPH).
