Starting the Delete Program for an Archiving Object

The delete program imports the archiving object data records that were copied to the archive files beforehand in a test run, and then deletes them from the operational database once they have been saved successfully in archive files. The data is copied to archive files for security purposes and to meet legal requirements, but the data that is no longer required in the operational system is deleted to ensure optimum performance.

The system starts an instance of the delete program automatically for each archive file that has been successfully created and closed. This process runs asynchronously to the write process. Since each write process can generate several archive files, the delete phase of the archiving process also runs in parallel. You can stop the delete process from starting automatically in the AOBJ basic settings, but this is not recommended for mass data.

For more information, refer to the Delete Program section of the SAP Library.

During the process, the delete program generates an application log containing statistical data and writes the current status in an activity log. You can display both logs using the archiving monitor, which also enables you to monitor the current progress.

To run the delete program, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • You are authorized to execute the archiving process. You can find more information on this in the Basic Settings -> Authorizations section of the Implementation Guide.
  • You have imported the Customizing entry supplied by SAP for the existing archiving object in IMG activity Maintain Global Control of Archiving into this client and adjusted it to meet the requirements of your company.
  • There are archive files with data that has not yet been deleted in the operational system.

You can use IMG activity Check Archiving Customizing to check whether your archiving Customizing settings are valid and complete.

For more information about this archiving object, see the document Archiving Object SLA.
