Starting the Write Program for Archiving

The write program copies all the archiving object data records that were given the archiving status Can Be Archived in the analysis program to the archive. In doing so, the write program generates one or more archive files, and stores these in the logical file path that you previously defined in Customizing under Define Logical File Paths.

Note:

In the standard system, the analysis program starts the write program automatically. If you do not want this to happen, you can change the setting in Customizing in IMG activity Maintain Global Archiving Control by deactivating the indicator Start Write Program Automatically After Analysis Program.

To improve performance, the write program uses parallel processing. This means that it divides the write process into numerous subprocesses that run asynchronously and are processed in parallel as jobs.

During processing, the write program generates an application log containing statistical data, and writes the current status in an activity log. You can use the archiving monitor to display these logs, and to see how archiving is progressing.

After the write run has finished, you can store the archived data records in archive files in other storage systems (for example, tapes or HSM systems).

For more information, see the Write Program section of the SAP Library.

Before you can use the write program, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • You are authorized to run the archiving process. For more information about authorization, see the section Basic Settings -> Authorizations in the Implementation Guide.
  • If you want to run the write program as a parallel process, you need to enter the write application type of your archiving object in the IMG activity Maintain Job Distribution. Otherwise, the system carries out the write process sequentially.
  • If you want to run the write program in parallel processing with a package formation profile generated beforehand, you need to implement a suitable procedure for forming package profiles. This method must be a function module. You also need to make an appropriate entry in IMG activity Global Archiving Control: Package Formation Procedure.
You can then generate the profile formation using the pre-step program for the archiving object, and save it in the database to be reused.

The check as to whether the SLA data can be archived takes place within the write program. The write program replicates all archivable data records of the archiving object to the archive. This means that you do not have call up a separate program to check and analyze the data.

For more information about this archiving object, see the document Archiving Object SLA.
