2-Tier to 3-Tier ??

Doreen,

I am following up on our previous discussions about a large systems users
group. After quite a number of discussions, we decided that using the
existing infrastructure of the Large Users Group (LUG) in Rochester might
work. I am including some of the details below of this group. Let me
know if this approach would work for your company. I have already posted
this on the iSeries forum but have as yet, received little response.

Is this group too much and too complex?

Information on the LUG:

This would be open to any customer who has over 10,000 CPW on four or
fewer AS/400 or iSeries machines

Within the LUG there are beginnings of "Special Interest Groups" already.
Specifically, there are quite a few customers who have unique interests in
applications like SAP. These groups have met in the evenings during LUG
week to discuss these various situations.

There probably is room within the LUG to have focus areas such as SAP. I
think that large SAP customers probably could join the LUG and learn
quite a bit from it, as well as form good relationships with others who run
SAP.

The LUG does have a web site where they share ideas and discussions. The
site is invaluable, but is not a substitute for the face to face meetings.
In fact, the LUG bylaws specify that meeting attendance is mandatory. The
board has enforced that rule in the past, terminating membership for those
who do not come to meetings. We have regular attendance from companies in
Hong Kong, the UK, and Poland. They have all found it worth the travel
time.

Members are asked to actively participate in meetings. They are asked to
initiate requirements on the product, own and track requirements, and
participate in the discussions at LUG. Confidential information is shared
at the meetings so members are asked to maintain that confidentiality. Each
company signs a comprehensive nondisclosure agreement with IBM before they
are allowed to attend meetings or gain access to the web site.

To join, a company simply calls the LUG board to discuss membership. The
membership person will ask about CPW, contact names, what kind of
applications run on the systems, etc. Then the board votes, and membership
is given the opportunity to reject based on non-compete reasons. (which has
never been exercised that I know of).

Hi,

SAP 4.6C V4R5: For Production we run 2-SB3 app servers to an 840 DB; the
comm infrastructure is pure 1gb ethernet between the 3 boxes & users come
into the app servers via 100mb ethernet
This runs wonderfully

SAP 4.6C V4R5: For Test we run 1-SB1 app server to a 730 DB; the comm
infrastructure is Opti-mover between the 2 boxes & the users come into the
app server via 100mb ethernet
This is the environment where all transactions & jobs take twice as long on
the SB1-APP SERVER vs running on the 730;
this has got me stumped cuz we used this setup for running SAP 3.1H V4R3
for years & NEVER had this happen.
I've identified that the timing differences are all in DB SEL time;
The OPTI API's must not be happy at V4R5

Also, in general, going from 2tier to 3tier is like having 1 child vs about
5 children. The environment just gets much more logistically complicated.

Subject: 2-Tier to 3-Tier ??

My company will be going through a large systems upgrade next year, and I
am wondering about the
possibility of switching my 2-tier environment to a 3-tier one. So I have
a few questions...

-What do I need to do to use Win2k for app servers? I've been hearing
about ASCII support for 2
years now, what's the current status?
-What is everyone else doing with SB1/2/3?
-Anyone running with Windoze app servers?

Thanks,
Andy
