DBSL patch level vs. Kernel patch level - stup id question

Hi Doreen,

I would say you started with 3.0F on V3R6, because SAP was only available
with RISC and not with CISC, but this doesn't matter at all.

What is on sapserv?
SAP has the strategy to patch every executable (*PGM) for itself. This
means, a problem in the TP, a problem in DW and R3TRANS all need different
files on sapserv.
So, normally all the files on sapserv represent one *PGM.
There are 2 exceptions of this rule:
- KERNEL
- LIB_DBSL

LIB_DBSL is the already described shared-library. This is on all platforms
available as single patch. So the NT users can download the same kernel
independent of the database. Only the LIB_DBSL is downloaded for the correct
database. This descreses the workload in the final assembly at SAP a lot,
because the LIB_DBSL is a lot smaller than the whole kernel.
The kernel is on every other platform only about 3 EXEs (DW, GWRD,
MSG_SERVER). On AS/400 we do have about 90 *SRVPGMs and a few pgms, because
of the sizes and other historical reasons. As of 6.10 we will have about 3
big EXEs as well. So the many *SRVPGMs will disappear. As the Kernel is
handled as ONE EXE only, there is always one file for all these kinds of
programs.

What should you download ?
It's really up to you!
Kernel, lib_dbsl, tp and r3trans would be recommended from my site. The rest
should be installed when necessary. When you want, you can install all the
EXEs that are available in your kernel (so R3UP and so on is useless in a
normal environment). Then you are always having something like a "complete
new CD".
