Tech-Ed Update

Hi all

Day 1 at Tech-Ed was all about the switch to a portal based SAP and W.A.S.
(Web Application Server) BASIS. In just a few words SAP will be replacing the
Workplace with web portal access and the 6.1 and better releases of SAP will
include J2EE (Java Enterprise) as well as ABAP, Waldorf has test systems with
AS/400's running SAP 6.1 W.A.S but I have no information about possible release
dates. I will let someone with more time and a better understanding explain this
stuff. Needless to say my "Buzz Word Bingo" card filled very quickly during the
keynotes.

It seems that all BASIS training will be switching to 6.1 soon and this will be
generic for all platforms and DB's. Thus Alan Olson will have just one AS/400
BASIS class left, better get those bookings in quick.

Very interesting news, we can now get a SAP Mini BASIS on one or two CD's that
allows us to install a BASIS only SAP release on our home/work/laptop PC's. I
picked up cd's from the IBM booth that allow me to load SAP BASIS 6.1 on my
Linux PC (it comes with DB2 for Linux). So now I can be the king of my own
little SAP install (BASIS Only) and play with 6.1 stuff. Also I can use this to
set up RZ20 for a real SAP network and administer real systems over RFC links.
Check out the SAP shop to buy this (www.sap.com/shop ) also
www.mysap.com/technology/minisap for license info. Other versions including a
NT/SQL server version are on their way. This is what every BASIS techie will
want for Christmas.

I asked at the booth about attendance yesterday afternoon and was told that
about 2700 of the 3000 registered people had checked in. The maximum number of
people who could have attended was about 4500. Tech-Ed normally sells out 4-6
weeks before hand. So numbers were down for all the obvious reasons.

We had our annual AS/400 SAP meeting at a nearby hotel bar. Thanks to all the
attendees. I made good on my previous threats and brought a digital camera. The
dreadful results are on the group web site at
http://photos.groups.consolut.net/group/SAP on System i/lst I have put some names on
the photos, please feel free to correct any spellings/name mistakes. I did
consider ticking the box that makes the photos only available to the over 18's
but seeing as no one under 30 even know what an as/400 is I figured that I could
take the risk.

Cheers
