Future Directions mySAP.com on IBM eServer iSe ries

Hi Michael,

I can tell you, that we will have nothing to "re-fix"!
The sorting problem fixes of the past were not made like the following:
if on AS/400 the work this way
else work
work the other way

The change was made simlar as follows:

old:
sort iTab

new:
sort iTab as text

"as text" ensure, that the soring happens with the locale and not with the
binary data. So, we don't think, to get back these kinds of problems.

In the last months ALWAYS the opposite was the case. There are unfortunately
still a lot of problems like this left, especially in new products. All
problems in EBCDIC were automatically "solved" in ASCII.

That we use UNICODE instead of ASCII is just the case, because it is not
possible, to store data in ASCII in the dabase with the CCSID 819 (ASCII
latin-1), but it is possible to store it with CCSID 13488 (Unicode, UCS2).
So, even when the data is in Unicode on the database, in the appl-server it
is ONLY in ASCII and so we think, that the old EBCDIC problems are really
gone now.

For ASCII latin-1-only systems (only codepage 1100 in TCPDB), it will be a
lot easier to convert to unicode later on (it is planned as option for
R3-Enterpris , 4.7 by the end of this year) because all the transparent
tables are already in the correct format (about 97% of the whole data!). So,
only the pool- and cluster tables would have to converted to unicode
afterwards.

Hope, this helps,

Volker

iSeries

Hi folks,

I'm just curious: is iSeries the only platform where database-tables have
to be converted to support GLS? I know, iSeries is the only platform that
works with EBCDIC instead of ASCII and so we need to convert to ASCII and
double-byte characters, but is UNICODE already used on the other platforms?

In the past, SAP had to fix some ABAP-codings because of the different
sort orders between EBCDIC and ASCII. I could imagine that some of these
programs have to be re-fixed to run correctly with ASCII-database-tables
on iSeries.

Kind regards,
Michael Rautenberg

iSeries

Hi all iSeries users,

SAP and IBM sent out the following letter to all iSeries customers in order
to explain the future strategy for SAP on iSeries this week:
32002.PDF"

As this topic is relatively complex there is a special questions & answers
document available as well at:

The point of interest in the SAP Service Marketplace for questions like this
is available at:

If you do have some more questions, feel free to use this consolut group or
send a mail to the IBM SAP International Competence Center(ISICC) at:

or
murrayZd...

You might want to use the following Service Marketplace Frontend as well at:
http://www.consolut.net
There you become a lot of interesting and current news on the homepage like
the above described and you can use a very easy way to access the SAP
Service Marketplace as well.
