No more parallel backup under V5R1??

Barry,

since the upgrade to V5R1 (both OS/400 and BRMS/400) the backup job (under
BRMS control) mounts 2 tapes and starts writing on both tapes as usual. But
when the tapes have reached end-of -volume, one drive just quit running
(status is READY, tape is not rewinded/unloaded) while the rest of the
backup ist now running with one drive left. So we are still able to backup
(and restore if neccesary) our data, but we've lost speed.

Meanwhile I have got another info from IBM support in Austria. Under V5R1
the functionality of parallel save is still available, but no longer for
"single objects", but for "multiple libraries". I don't know exactely what a
"multiple library" is, but I fear it means that I can't save my single 650
Gb R3<sid>data in parallel mode in the future. I'm still investigating
different sources for further information on that issue.

Franz

Franz,

When we upgraded our sandbox to V5R1 the backup method on that
system is not
an issue since we only have the one drive. But...our production
back up is
currently using 3 drives and doing the parallel backup. I sent a
question
off to our business partner to see if they had heard anything. Did
your
backup process just start using one drive or did it quit working all
together?

Thanks for the warning...

Barry

Hi group

we just got the info from IBM's hotline, that under V5R1 you are not
longer
able to run backup of a library in parallel mode with more than one
tapedrive. Are they kidding? Without parallel backup we need about
12 hours
to complete backup, compared to about 8 hours when saving with two
units.
Can this be true? Who is already runnning V5R1 and how do you
backup?

Thanks,
Franz
