How to change i-Series system serial number?


Tom,

MES upgrades demonstrate the same serial number running on two separate
AS/400 systems, which is what I also want to accomplish for DR.

I agree to a point, all of the documentation I can locate shows QSRLNBR as
read only, and there is an API which
is also only 'read' for QSRLNBR. However, we are finishing up a data
center consolidation and we had a '30' day
period of time in which my organization had a model-730 with serial number
"'abcdxxx" and at the same time
had a model-840 also running with the same "abcdxxx" serial number......

So, there is a way to do this - and even IBM Business Recovery Services
does not deny the technical possibility,
however they are stating that it is against there 'policies'.

During the consolidation project third party license keys have been the
biggest issue, with some vendors out of business,
and others unwilling to even supply temporary keys due to billing issues.
IBM should be willing to simply change the
serial number for us on the DR system.

I think this is an issue which can eventually affect all of us in the event
of a true DR 'incident', and reaching out to
dozens of third party vendors and hoping for functioning keys is overly
optimistic.

The sysval QSRLNBR is a read-only sysval and cannot be changed!
This was only possible in the 'old' days of AS/400 (I think until
Version 2 of OS/400). Because a lot of companies used to link there
licenses to the serial number of the AS/400 and former S/36 it was
changed to read-only.
