SAVSTG command

If you want to test disaster recovery there are two scenarios .

1: you have HW with operating system on

2: you get new hw with nothing on.

For option 1: you can use homogeneous system copy or IPL from tape. (from a
save entire system option 21 on the save menu)

For option 2: You start the machine from the microcode CD (In this case do
not restore the configuration)

For your information, I just tried it - (Both methods) and it worked

Remember if you restore everything the new machine will get same IP number
and name as you other machine.

I would suggest you to read the Reedbook, but for more detailed read IBM
backup recovery guide

HI,

To my knowledge SAVSTG only works on same machine/HW/serialnumber (same
config - don't even remove one disk !)

SAVSTG is fast but in my opinion useless.

Hi,

I think, you should ask IBM on this!
Because, I could imagine, that the restore for this SAVSTG only works with
the similar hardware - but I'm not sure on this.

Hi All,
I have some question about "SAVSTG" command. I have two AS/400
servers,DEV and PRD server both server have same 820 model, OS release but
DEV disk 184GB and PRD 112GB. If i want to test disaster recovery by
1.Save system DEV server by "SAVSTG" command.
2.Save entire system from PRD server and restore into DEV server. And test
DRT untill finish.
3.Restore DEV system from tape which backup by "SAVSTG" command.

These step can work or not? Especially step 3.Please give me some
suggestion. Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Poonsak Samittitada
