SAP without Interactive card?

Hi Rick,

I did not do much with upgrade/replace pricing yet but it appears that
you could even "downgrade" to a new box with more horsepower, cheaper
prices and maybe even lower processor group. That could add up to a
substantial savings. And keep in mind it's not just the CPW alone, you
also get much faster controller cards and disks, which can contribute to
performance gains quite a bit.

I just replaces at a customer site a 4-way 730 with a the fastest single
processor 270 and have a better throughput with the same number of
users. As I did not expect such a "boost" I was positively surprised how
fast the new system was. The 270 has the 4778 Raid controller and 10K
drives, which make quite a different for a relative small price increase
(compared to the small Raid controller and the "old" disks).

Have IBM run a configuration for you including hardware and software and
you mind yourself getting a brand new box for much less than you could
get on the previous models.

I also just read an article in the MC magazine (
http://www.mcpressonline.com/mc/.6ae587d6!more=1#more ) about the new
pricing and according to that some of the boxes you now can get for
"Green-Streak" prices which was about 50% off. With the new prices you
might also have better arguments when talking to your SQL server guys.

And personally I think that with the new systems and the new pricing
structure IBM is currently sitting in the nest "polishing up those
golden eggs" again.

Hi Gerd,

Indeed, these price advantages may be the only thing that keeps us
in the iSeries world. We are currently running an 8-way 730 and it's
upgrade window is now very short. The "migrate to SQL server" forces
are screaming loud and hard now that the pricing has been announced
(4 days after the original - whose brainstorm was that anyway?).
IMHO, IBM is "killing the goose that laid the golden egg" when they
force mid-sized companies like us out.
