Hello Udo,I can answer these...
1) Will we need to move to Basis version 6.2 at some time in the future (due to
support of our current version expiring, etc.)?
4.6 requires a 4.6 basis and a 4.6 kernel. 4.6C is maintained in ascii and
ebcdic. Eventually, you will need to upgrade your 4.6x system to 4.7 which is
SAP Enterprise. This upgrade will require that you first update your system to
4.6C ebcdic. Once you have updated your system to 4.6C ebcdic, you will have to
perform a migration to ascii. You will then be able to upgrade your 4.6C ascii
system to 4.7 SAP enterprise.
2) Verify that Basis version 6.2 is ASCII based.
All as/400 and iseries kernels starting with 4.6C and later are maintained as
ascii systems. Only 4.6C is maintained as both ebcdic and ascii.
3) Verify that the next version of SAP (Enterprise) requires Basis version 6.2.
SAP Enterprise which starts with release 4.7 requires basis 6.2 as a minimum.
SAP has decoupled the basis system (web application server) from the
application. In the future, it will be possible to upgrade the web application
server to 6.3 or later as a separate function from the 4.7 enterprise software.
