100mb ethernet 3 tier --> two tier

We went to two tier from three tier about a year ago but have recently had
to go to a three tier again. We run an 840 24 processor with two LPARs. On
one LPAR we have a 3.1i instance running and on the other a 4.6b instance.
We have around 1000 concurrent users and we recently saw the system freezing
for a minute or so at a time on the 3.1i system with all work processes
full, despite the I series running at only 25% CPU. This was checked out by
SAP and concluded that the system was saturated and that a limit had been
reached on the work processes (you can only have 68 in 3.1i in an instance).
To get around this they created a virtual application server on the 840
which of course gave us the additional work processes. So even if you go
three tier there is an opportunity within the two tier to revert if there is
an issue. To my knowledge we haven't experienced any other issues related to
two tier.

Subject: 100mb ethernet 3 tier --> two tier

Hi,

We are in the process of going from three tier --> two tier. We
currently have users and printing on three application servers.
Would there be, or has anyone experienced a bottleneck with the 100mb
ethernet card serving all users and all printing request in a two
tier environment? We have about 200 active users and a rather heavy
amount of printing.

Thanks,

Philip Stracener
