It turned out that the only "problem" was that our PTF's weren't ascurrent as I thought. Duh. Once past that, the kernel installed fine
and the system started without issue.
I don't have any real stats to compare yet but so far it seems to be
snappier (on our 830 DEV system (R/3 46C EBCDIC V5R1).
