Antwort: ASCII to Unicode

Hello Jürgen,

As far as I remember SAP R/3 enterprise 4.7x1.10 is SAP's first product making
full use of a UNICODE codepage. This product is also available based on the
standard ASCII codepages as many releases did before. The UNICODE implementation
just ended RampUp recently and is available in unrestricted shipment now.
All this means that we do not see a large number of installations based on
UNICODE, though there are some of them already running on iSeries.
All I know so far is that the UNICODE implementation is in a vary good shape -
we have just received positive feedback so far.
When it comes to performance, it is essential to know that a UNICODE system
requires more resources than an ASCII system. This is valid for CPU, memory and
disk. I do not know official numbers for CPU and memory, but with a UNICODE SAP
application server that operates on fixed length 2 byte character representation
(on every platform) each character string requires twice as much bytes to be
operated. Since much data SAP operates on is character data, CPU and memory
consumption will grow. I know there must be some guidelines from SAP on how much
more CPU and memory is required, but I don't know details.
Disk space for database contents is a bit more complicated to explain, since
there are differences in platforms.
First, you should (and can) only compare ASCII vs. UNICODE. EBCDIC vs. UNICODE
cannot be compared because they do not share the same releases (EBCDIC is not
available for R/3 enterprise).
Second, ASCII on iSeries already requires +60% more disk space (measured for R/3
4.6C) than the EBCDIC implementation of the same release, because character data
in transparent tables are stored in 2 byte UNICODE database fields. Pool- and
Cluster Tables still run single byte in ASCII, so they need additional space in
a UNICODE system, though...
Third, if SAP generic statements tell you that UNICODE needs +70% more disk
space than ASCII, then this is true on all other platforms than iSeries, because
of things mentioned under "second". UNICODE system on iSeries just needs about
10% more disk space than ASCII.

I hope this helps.

Hello Christian,

this conversion will be done by the company BASYCS. Our Release level is R3
/ 4.7. We only use ISO-LATIN 1, so the conversion should be easier. Besides
German, English, France, Spain and several Scandinavian languages we plan
to implement polish, Chinese, Japanese and possible Arab.
So lets say the conversion was successful. What do i have to expect in
performance and stability ?

Hello Jürgen,
what kind of system (product/Release) do you plan to convert to UNICODE?
Who is going to execute this on your site?
I know that R/3 Enterprise 4.7x1.10 UNICODE is GA now, but i.e. 4.7x2.00 is
still in RampUp until end of march 2004.
What language requirements do you have, e.g. are you having DBCS languages
involved or is your ASCII system using MDMP now? Any yes to this question
implies that the conversion is not a simple do it yourself task, but has to
be handled as a special project (on all platforms) until further notice.

Hello,

are there any experiences in performance and stability on Unicode R3
Systems.  We plan to change from ASCII to Unicode in a few weeks.

Thanks
Jürgen
