ASP + Shark

Hello Volker,
Thank you for your explanations. I will carry this with me for the next
times when I have to setup a new box!
Regards, Vincenzo

Hi Vincenzo,

what shall I say ?

The recommendation from SAP GoinLive to use Mirroring is definetely
still there. This is because of the safety.
In the meantime IBM changed the controllers and with newest hardware
it is faster to use RAID-5 for the ASP2 than mirroring - please don't
ask me why but that is the case.
As RAID-5 needs at least 4 drives, you either put really one complete
raid-set of 4 drives into asp2 which is mostly too costly at the
customer. Or you use mirroring. But, please do NOT use raid-5 with a
mixture of ASPs in the raid-set! If you should do this, you have in
reality only 1 ASP, but you won't see this!!! So, if you prefer the
last approach, please do it right and use only 1 ASP. Then everybody
sees what's the reality and RAID-5 protection is not too bad as well,
is it?

So, it is your and the customers decision what to do:
- Use the SAP recommendation and be 200% safe
- use 1 ASP and be only 100% safe and faster with mass updates

Or create a really large (many disk arms) ASP2 and have both ...

Sorry,

Volker
