Short text

Incorrect time in syslog and other timestamps
Tip-No.: 2072

Symptom

Syslog entries, enqueue keys, and update keys contain timestamps
that differ from the correct| time in whole hours. Unix command
"date" and SY-UZEIT displays the correct time. At system start,
an ABAP short dumkp, "ZDATE_LARGE_TIME_DIFF" is written.

Cause

Incorrect installation if time zone in computer, or compile mode of SAP
programs does not fit setting of time zone.

Solution

In DEC/Ultrix, the evaluation of the time zone setting within C programs
is dependent on the compile mode (SYSTEM_FIVE, POSIX, etc.).
It can therefore occur, that programs translated with SYSTEM-FIVE
display a different "local time" than programs that are not translated
with this option. Time differences are normally full hours. See
the manual page for "localtime", ("man localtime").

Correct time zone setting in SYSTEM_FIVE requires a file
"/etc/zoneinfo/localtime", that is generated via copies of one of the
templates in the same directory, e.g. with "cp CET localtime".
CET is the file that contains the correct time zone installations
for central europe (CET = Central European Time). Other regions
require other files.
This creates the default setting. You must now make sure that a
correct default setting is not then made incorrect by an incorrect
value in environment variable TZ |.
