DB cannot be closed down or started up
Tip-No.: 2187

Symptom

ORACLE database cannot be started up.
Shutdown with 'shutdown immediate' also fails.

Cause

Background processes(SMON, PMON, DBWR, LGWR) have 'died'.
SGA area is however not there. Result: normal shutdown fails
('shutdown immediate') because the processes are missing, startup
is not possible due to SGA existence.

Solution

Use 'shutdown abort' to stop the DB.
Then 'startup' is possible. This might take a long time
(Instance recovery, perhaps archiving).
