Conversion from Type N to Type P or F
Tip-No.: 2734

Symptom

Assigning a type N field to a fixed point field (type P, report
attribute "Fixed point arithmetic" marked) or a type F field converts
the type N field to sign-less whole number.

Cause

This behavior is intended, as type N represents pure digit sequences
without signs and decimal points.

Solution

Type N stands for purely digital sequences (i.e. telephone and account
numbers). You cannot normally perform useful calculations with them. For
numbers, you should use Types I, P or F.
