SOP: Mass Processing in Release 3.0 of Sales & Operations Planning

Description

Release 3.0 of Sales & Operations Planning comes with a mass processing function that allows you to process large volumes of data in a few simple steps. To optimize the use of system resources, you run mass processing jobs in the background. Actions supported by mass processing are:

  • forecasting
  • copying key figures from one information structure to another
  • transferring data to Demand Management
  • executing macros
  • copying a planning version of an information structure to another planning version of the same information structure
  • deleting a planning version
  • setting opening stock levels

The procedure for running a mass processing job is as follows:

  1. You define one or more actions. This step applies only to the first four actions listed above.
You define the first three of these actions in profiles, and the fourth as part of a planning type.
  1. You create a planning activity which comprises one or more actions; for example, forecasting, a macro to adjust sales figures, and the copying of sales figures in one information structure to production figures in another information structure.
As in step 1, the creation of a planning activity is necessary only for the first four actions listed above.

Note
If you run a job based on a planning activity (step 2), the system processes the job characteristic value by characteristic value. Thus, if the characteristic values are sales organization NORTH and sales organization SOUTH and the actions are forecasting, a macro, copying, and transfer to Demand Management, the processing sequence will look like this:
Characteristic value   Action
Sales organization NORTH   forecasting
  macro
  copying
  transfer to Demand Management
Sales organization SOUTH   forecasting
  macro
  copying
  transfer to Demand Management

The sequence of the actions depends on the numbers set in the field Act.sequence in the definition of the activity.
  1. You create a mass processing job for this planning activity.
In this step, you enter the information structure and the planning version(s) for which the planning job will be carried out.
You also create a variant in which you specify the job parameters such as characteristic values, planning horizon, and planning activity.
  1. You schedule the mass processing job.
For example, you can set the job to start during the night when fewer demands are made on system resources.
  1. The system carries out this job.
  2. Using the Job overview, you check that the job has run successfully.

For more information on forecasting and the copying of key figures between information structures, see SOP: New Ways to Plan in Release 3.0 of Sales & Operations Planning.

For more information on macros, see SOP: Planning Types and Macros.

For more information on initial stock levels, see SOP: Setting Opening Stock Levels.
