SOP: Planning Units

Description

In Release 3.0c, the procedures for defining units of measure and currencies have been changed to enhance integration between Sales & Operations Planning (SOP) and other applications with which it is linked.

Customizing

You now maintain the default planning units for an information structure in the Customizing step "Set parameters for info structures and key figures". It is vitally important this is done before you start planning.

In particular, you enter a base unit of measure and a currency unit. If you intend to use more than one currency, for example, if you are planning across national boundaries, you also need to enter an exchange rate type. This is needed to identify the exchange rate for conversion between currency units.

What Happens With the Units When You Create a Planning Hierarchy

In Release 3.0a and 3.0b, you could change the base unit of measure and statistics currency of any characteristic value with Extras -> Units. In Release 3.0c, this is possible only under certain circumstances. If consistent planning has been set for the information structure, you cannot maintain the units in the planning hierarchy. If level-by-level planning has been set for the information structure, you can change the base units of measure for characteristic values above the material level provided that conversion is possible via the SI system (e.g. 1 tonne = 1000 kg); the default unit of measure is the one that has been defined in Customizing.

Moreover, if the planning method is level-by-level and the planning hierarchy contains characteristic values at levels lower than "material" (for example, "plant"), the system automatically sets their base units of measure to be the same as those of the materials. These base units are then fixed, that is, you cannot change them.

If your planning hierarchy contains materials (that is, one of the characteristics in the information structure is "material"), the conversion factors to convert between the base unit of measure of the information structure and the base unit of measure of the materials need to have been defined in the material master records. The system warns you if no conversion factor exists for a material. You can then call up the material master record and maintain the unit of the information structure as an alternative unit, together with a conversion factor. This is particurly important for the transfer of data from SOP to Demand Management.

What Happens With the Units When You Plan the Data

When you carry out consistent planning, the key figure values are shown in the unit of measure or currency unit maintained in Customizing (the step "Set parameters for info structures and key figures"). When you carry out level-by-level planning, the key figure values are shown in the unit of measure or currency unit maintained for that characteristic value in the planning hierarchy. However, with both planning methods the unit field is ready for input; that is, you can overwrite the proposed unit with any other unit to which it can be converted. The system then converts the key figure values to the new unit of measure or currency unit.

Conversion is possible between units of measure either if the conversion can be carried out via the SI system (e.g. 1 tonne = 1000 kg) or if conversion factors have been maintained in the material master record. Currency conversion is carried out using the Customizing settings made centrally under "Global settings" and the exchange rate type defined in Customizing for Sales & Operations Planning (the step "Set parameters for info structures and key figures").

What Happens With the Units When You Save the Data

In consistent planning, key figure values are stored on the database in the unit of measure and currency unit maintained in the Customizing transaction "Set parameters for info structures and key figures".

In level-by-level planning, key figure values are stored on the database in the unit of measure or currency unit maintained for the relevant characteristic value in the planning hierarchy.

What Happens With the Units When You Transfer Data to Demand Management

When you pass on data from SOP to Demand Management, planned independent requirements are created in Demand Management in the base units of measure of the materials. This means that if you have planned a material in SOP in a unit other than its base unit, the necessary conversion factor between the two units needs to have been maintained in the material master record.

Effects on Customizing

You maintain your planning units in Set parameters for info structures and key figures.

Further notes

If you have been using Release 3.0a or 3.0b of Sales & Operations Planning, we strongly recommend that you check the settings of your information structures in the new Customizing step "Set parameters for info structures and key figures" before starting work with Release 3.0c.
