Engineering Workbench Released for Productive Operation

Scope of Functions

The Engineering Workbench is an environment for maintaining product structures and operations, the potential of which far exceeds the conventional approach to bill of material and routing maintenance.

The Engineering Workbench was previously only accessible with limited functions for testing purposes, however from Release 4.6A you can use the Engineering Workbench for productive operation with no restrictions.

Overview:

The most important objects in the Engineering Workbench are BOM items and operations. Views of these objects are available that present the conventional structures of bills of material and routings. In addition to this, other views are now available that were previously not possible.

All of the maintenance functions, such as Create, Change and Delete are supported on all these views. There are now additional new functions such as multi-level copying.

Integrated Processing:

You no longer have to process bills of material and routings separately, as you did before. You simply select those object types such as bill of material, PRT, work operation with which you want to work. Your selection is contained within a working area. You can, for example, create one specific working area for your design and one for your production.

You can navigate completely freely between the object types you have selected. You switch between screens within a single user interface. This means that, at any time, you can filter by certain objects, using the cockpit, or copy them, with the aid of the object browser's drag & drop function.

Complex Selection Criteria:

In principle all attributes of object types in your working area can be used to select, whether individually or in combination with each other. You can save your selection criteria to use again later, or as a modifiable default setting.

Simultaneous Processing:

Several users can process any item (operation) from any BOM (routing) at the same time. If you want to edit a BOM item (operation) that is being processed by somebody else, the Engineering Workbench displays contact information for this person, should any discussion be necessary. The other user can release the BOM item (operation) for you and the work of neither person need be interrupted.

Engineering Change Management:

The Engineering Workbench supports all functions of the Engineering Change Management component LO-ECH. For example, you can display the change statuses of any object at any time. Parameter effectivity (a validity concept that extends beyond the previous time-related validity) has been integrated. You can create and process all objects in the Engineering Workbench with parameter effectivity.

User Support:

In the Engineering Workbench you always work on a consistent user interface. If you are use the same functions with several object types (such as production resources/tools or items) you can perform them in the same way. Using the object browser and helpful filter and sort functions you can have a good overview of even complex product structures. You can save incomplete results without your work in the Engineering Workbench being interrupted.

Further Information

You can find further information on the Engineering Workbench in the R/3 Library under LO - Logistics -> PP - Production Planning and Control -> Engineering Workbench.
