Transaction and Screen Variants

Scope of Functions

Transaction variants are designed to simplify translation process flow (for example, by pre-filling fields with values, hiding or changing whether field input is possible, or even by hiding entire screen, and so on).

As of Release 4.6A, a transaction variant consists of screen variants. A screen variant contains field values (contents, display properties, and table control layout) for a screen. This screen variant is assigned to one or more transaction variants. A transaction variant can also contain additional information, such as which screens to hide, or which function codes to deactivate.

Screen variants can contain GuiXT scripts. GuiXT is a tool, delivered with the R/3 System, used to change the layout of a screen without modifying the R/3 System. You can use GuiXT to rearrange fields, add graphics, change and add texts, add pushbuttons and check boxes, and so on.

Screen variants are created within transaction variant maintenance. You maintain a screen variant for every transaction whose settings you want to change. Transaction variants can also be created by assigning existing screen variants to them. When a transaction variant is called, the assigned screen variants are automatically displayed.

You can also set screen variants in the flow logic of the corresponding screen using a function module.

GuiXT scripts can be stored centrally in the R/3 System in screen and transaction variant maintenance. These scripts contain the commands for adjusting the screen. They can also be stored locally on a PC and will then be automatically executed when the SAPgui is called.
