Contributions to Medical Aid

Use

Effective as of 01.01.2000, there are new legislative rules governing Medical Aid contributions in South Africa.

The Medical Aid Schemes Act and the related regulations prescribe that an individual can not be discriminated against for health coverage based on the following criteria:

  • Health

  • Gender

  • Number of dependents

  • Previous health insurance claims

The act also stipulates that no discrimination may be taken in both the area of premiums and benefits to any person deemed by the act to be a dependant. For this reason, the act makes provisions which are based solely on an employee's income and number of dependants.

Based on income tables, an employee's contribution amount to their Medical Aid scheme is comprised (where applicable) according to the following elements:

  • Coverage for themselves (primary member)

  • Coverage for each adult dependant

  • Coverage for each child dependant

Note: To be considered a child dependant, the dependant must be under the age of 21 or a full-time student (up to the age of 27).

Effects on Existing Data

  • On the infotype Social Insurance SA (0150), the fields Contribution class and Special contribution class have been hidden, as they are no longer necessary. (To hide these fields, use the Infotype Screen Controltable (T588M)).

Effects on Data Transfer

Effects on System Administration

Effects on Customizing

  • For release 4.5B and all subsequent releases, the new medical aid contribution information has been integrated into the existing view cluster VC_MED_ZA.. See in the IMG: Personnel Management -> Personnel Administration-> Payroll Data -> Social Insurance ZA -> Maintain Medical Aid insurances.
  • After maintaining the Medical Aid contribution tables, you must also update each employee record on infotype Social Insurance SA (0150) to reflect the new dependant structure.

Further Information

  • On the infotype Social Insurance SA (0150), the fields Number of Adult Dependants and the Number of Child Dependants have been added.
  • New payroll cycle WNMA (valid as of 01.01.2000) which determines whether the payroll period is before, during or after the 01.01.2000. WNMA is delivered to be used with the new Medical Aid calculation if the payroll period is during or after 01.01.2000, otherwise you should use the old method calculation.
  • For additional information and details on system configurations, see the OSS notes 188803 and 190279.
