APO-ATP-BF: Characteristics-Based Product Availability Check

Use

As of Release 3.0A (First Customer Shipment and Support Package 1), you can perform a product availability check on the characteristics level, in other words, you can perform this check for configured products and batches from the sales order entry screen or delivery.

The availability check on the characteristics level is only valid for the product availability check (the first basis method). You can also perform product allocation on the characteristics level, but in this case you will use another time series.

You cannot replace a configured product or batch in its characteristics value assignment by another characteristics value assignment as this is not supported by rules-based ATP (for example, you cannot replace pill A (red) by pill A (blue).

You can also simulate a characteristics-based product availability check.

The system issues characteristics in the time series monitor as a GUID. The GUID encodes a characteristics combination. As of Release 3.0A (FCS + SP1), you will see the symbol Characteristics: Not available or Characteristics: Available in the time series display. You can display all the characteristics for the corresponding class by means of a double-click. If you have not marked the characteristics as ATP-relevant, in other words, if the products are not available in the ATP characteristics view, the system displays the characteristics without a value assignment.

You can call up the time series monitor from the SAP Easy Access Menu using the menu path Global ATP Environment Technical Monitors Time Series.

It is currently not possible to display the characteristics combination in the product view.

Technical Implementation

  • Container concept
Characteristics are stored for ATP together with their value assignment as an abstract number in the liveCache. Assignment is carried out on the APO side by means of the corresponding tables.
Example
The color RED is represented by the number 35, while 1219 stands for the color BLUE.
Materials are combined logically when you create an ATP characteristics view. These materials are then managed in a container; in other words, a container corresponds to an ATP characteristics view. Each characteristics combination that exists for one of the materials (expressed by the list of abstract numbers representing the characteristic attributes) is saved as an independent object. Each of these objects is uniquely identified by a GUID (ATP characteristics GUID) and refers to all the materials in the view for which time series elements with the corresponding characteristics combination exist. The time series elements are identified by the GUID. You can display this GUID in the time series monitor. By clicking twice on the characteristics symbol (green triangle), you can display the characteristics together with their value assignments. Those characteristics that are not copied to the view are shown as initial.
This structure in the liveCache ensures that all materials of the ATP characteristics view for which time series elements with the corresponding characteristics combination exist are found immediately for a given characteristics combination.
Based on this procedure, we recommend that you restrict the number of ATP-relevant characteristics as much as possible. This achieves better system performance on the one hand, and on the other, ensures the suppression of the cumulation procedure in the time series if the number of characteristics combinations is too large.
Outlook
A function whereby the user can search for materials for which only a subset of the ATP-relevant characteristics have been specified within the ATP characteristics view is planned for future development.
Example
You have defined the color and size of the material as ATP-relevant characteristics. If you define SMALL for the size, and do not specify a color, the system will find all materials with time series elements with the characteristic size SMALL, regardless of color.
  • ATP Characteristics View
In the ATP characteristics view, you perform a grouping of products with characteristics. You can use all characteristics that appear in the intersection to perform a characteristics-based product availability check, in other words, you define ATP-relevant characteristics here. This ATP characteristics view enables you to perform a characteristics-based stock search.
ATP Characteristics View
Product Characteristics Characteristics Characteristics
A Color Size Length
B Color Size
C Color Size

You can use the intersection of all characteristics (in this example, color and size) in the ATP characteristics view.
Activate the ATP characteristics view. This enables you to perform characteristics-related postings (receipts, stocks, and issues) in the time series.
If you activate or delete an ATP characteristics view, data may not exist in the liveCache for products in the ATP characteristics view.
Transaction data may not be transferred from the OLTP System to the APO System during activation or deactivation. Changes to transaction data are also not permitted.
We recommend that you work with separate integration models for master data and transaction data when transferring data from the R/3 System to the APO System using the APO core interface.

Example

  1. You have a product Pill with the following characteristics combination and characteristics value assignment in the R/3 System:
Product "Pill"
Characteristics Active Ingredient Gehalt Farbe

Values ,, A ,, 10 ,, Red

Values ,, B ,, 20 ,, Blue

Values ,, C ,, 50 ,,

  1. You create an ATP characteristics view with the relevant characteristics in the APO System, and perform a grouping of products.
ATP Characteristics View
Product Characteristic Characteristic Characteristic
A Active Ingredient Content Color
B Active Ingredient Content Color
C Active Ingredient Content

You can use the intersection of all characteristics in the ATP characteristics view. Only the characteristics Active ingredient and Content are permitted in this view. If you have activated the ATP characteristics view, the system sends characteristics-related postings (receipts, stocks, and requirements) to the time series.
  1. You create a sales order for this configured material in the OLTP System, and specify the desired characteristic value assignment.
  2. A product availability check is performed on the characteristics level in the APO System; that is, the ATP check is performed against the time series in which the characteristic value assignment exists. Characteristics-based ATP places the full functionality of the first basis method at your disposal.
In this example, only one time series considers both A and 10. Characteristic value assignments are not considered.
  1. The system displays a delivery default screen on which you can confirm the delivery default.
  2. Save the sales order.

Integration

The characteristics-based product availability check uses CDP characteristics (characteristics-dependent planning) in the APO System.

This function changes the previous procedure. Up to now, the system processed the check using pegging when you checked the availability of a configured material, in other words, using the procedure with which the system assigns the corresponding receipt elements to the requirements. The APO product availability functionality is not supported in this area (for example, the system does not write any temporary quantity reservations).

Because the combination of characteristic value assignments specifies the time series in addition, you can now use product availability check functionality such as:

  • ATP lock logic (temporary quantity reservation)
  • Check under consideration of the checking horizon
  • Check on the sublocation and version level
  • ...

Characteristics are transferred from the connected system to APO by means of an interface. The characteristic value assignments are not transferred during the transfer of classes and characteristics. You must maintain these value assignments subsequently in the APO System if you want to use the F4 input help.

  1. You define the characteristics system with which you want to work in the APO System.
To do this, select the characteristic type using Basis Settings Define Class System (CDP or Classical Characteristics) in Customizing for the Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO).
Note
Note that the characteristics-based product availability check can only work with CDP characteristics, in other words, you must select the CDP class system.
  1. You maintain the classes and characteristics in the R/3 System.
To do this, you perform the relevant settings that are to be found in R/3 Customizing for Cross-Application Components under Classification System.
You must be aware of the following when creating characteristics in the R/3 System:
  • The characteristics must be unique in the value assignment. In other words, you must set the indicator Single value, as this ensures that the characteristic can only be assigned a single value.

  • You must have set the indicator Input required. This indicator defines whether a value must be assigned to the characteristic.

  • Interval values are not allowed for numerical values.

  • Additional values are not allowed.

If you create classes, you must note the following:
  • Only the class types 022 Batch, 23 Batch and 300 Variants are currently supported.

  1. You maintain the classification in the R/3 material master.
  2. You transfer the master data from the R/3 System to APO in a first integration model.
As of Release 4.6A, you can do this by choosing Logistics--> Central Functions-->Supply Chain Planning Interface-->Core Interface--> Advanced Planner and Optimizer--> Integration Modein the SAP Easy Access Menu.
Prior to 4.6A, you could create and activate integration models using the transaction /nCIF, and then the area menu.
Ensure that you have set the indicator for characteristics and classes in the integration model.
  1. Create an ATP characteristics view in ATP Customizing in the APO System.
  2. You transfer transaction data from the R/3 System to APO in a second integration model.

The system can only perform a characteristics-based product availability check correctly if you observe the sequence of system settings.

Effects on Customizing

You maintain the ATP characteristics view in Customizing for Global ATP under Product Availability Check Maintain Characteristics View.

Creating an ATP Characteristics View

  1. Define a name for the ATP characteristics view.
  2. Switch to the subdialog Products. Perform a grouping of products by selecting the products.
The system only accepts products with characteristics. If you press the input help for products, the system will only select products with characteristics.
  1. When you exit the subdialog Products, the system determines the intersection of the characteristics for the selected products, and adds them to the subdialog mask Characteristics.
  2. If you want to change the automatic assignment of characteristics, switch to the subdialog Characteristics. Here you can delete characteristic assignments.
  3. Activate and save the ATP characteristics view. You can also save this view without activating it.
  4. Changing the ATP Characteristics View
  5. Select an ATP characteristics view.
  6. Switch to the subdialog Products. Perform a grouping of products by adding new products or deleting existing products from the list.
The system only accepts products with characteristics. If you press the input help for products, the system will only select products with characteristics.
  1. If you have already activated the ATP characteristics view, the system can only assign products which already have assigned characteristics. You can only delete an already active product if no transaction data exists for this product.
  2. When you exit the subdialog Products, the system determines the intersection of the characteristics for the selected products. The system automatically removes assigned characteristics that are not in the new intersection from the list. If characteristics have already been assigned, no further characteristics are added to the list.
  3. If you want to change the automatic assignment of characteristics, switch to the subdialog Characteristics. Here you can delete characteristic assignments.
  4. Activate and save the ATP characteristics view. You can also save this view without activating it.

Deleting the ATP Characteristics View

  1. Select an ATP characteristics view. Deactivate the view if it is already active.
You can only deactivate the ATP characteristics view if no transaction data exists for the active products in the liveCache.
  1. Delete the ATP characteristics view.
  2. Save your changes.
