Promotion Planning

Use

Release 3.0A (First Customer Shipment and Support Package 1) of Promotion Planning comes with the following additions and changes.

Promotion Planning Screen

The Promotion Planning screen has changed. You now see a shuffler on the left from which you can select the characteristic value combinations and the planning book with which you want to work. You use the shuffler in the same way as in interactive demand planning. On the right you see an application toolbar and a series of tabstrips. For more information on the application toolbar, see below. Once you have made your selections and have made entries in the fields on the tabstrips, thus defining the promotion, a table appears also on the right. The appearance of the table depends on which object view you have chosen. For an explanation of the different object views, see below.

Interactive Demand Planning

You can now branch directly from interactive demand planning to promotion planning. The prerequisite for this is that you selected the Promotion view when designing the planning book.

Cannibalization Groups

Use cannibalization groups to model the mutual dependency of promotional sales of similar products. The sales of the products in a cannibalization group are affected, some positively some negatively, by the same promotion.

To define a cannibalization group, choose Demand Planning -> Planning -> Promotion -> Maintain Cannibalization Group from the SAP Easy Access menu. For each product in a cannibalization group, you define a cannibalization factor.

To apply the cannibalization group, select Check cannibalization group and enter the cannibalization group on the Promotion tabstrip of the promotion planning screen. If you create a promotion for one of the products in the group, the other promotions are created automatically.

Example: You expect a 5% discount on liter bottles of rosemary shampoo to cause their sales to rise by 30%, while sales of 250 milliliter bottles will drop by 3% and sales of 500 milliliter bottles will drop by 5%.

You define the cannibalization group as follows:

  • Liter bottle ,,+30
  • 250 ml bottle ,,-3
  • 500 ml bottle ,,-5

You create a promotion for the liter bottle. Negative promotions are created automatically for the 250 ml and 500 ml bottles, in the proportions specified by the factors in the cannibalization group.

Promotion Status

The field Status on the Promotion tabstrip of the promotion planning screen displays the status of a promotion. To change a status, use the Status icon in the promotion planning toolbar on the top right. The following statuses are possible:

Status Short Text Explanation
A Active Promotion is active and running in the current
periods. It is saved to liveCache.
C Confirmed The customer has confirmed that they agree to
run the promotion. Use this status in
  conjunction with Collaborative Demand Planning.
D In process The promotion has a draft status. It is in
the process of being created but is not
yet finished. It is not saved to liveCache.
F Expired The promotion lies in the past.
O Offered You have submitted the promotion to the
customer for their approval and you are
  waiting for a reply.
P Planned The promotion is active and will run in the
future. It is saved to liveCache.
R Rejected The customer has refused to run this
promotion. Use this status in conjunction
  with Collaborative Demand Planning.

Promotion Attribute Types and Promotion Attributes

Use promotion attribute types and promotion attributes to classify and select promotions.

Your company can have a maximum of 10 promotion attribute types. For examples, you could have the promotion attribute types store discount and media support. You define promotion attribute types by choosing Demand Planning -> Planning -> Promotion -> Maintain Promotion Attribute Types from the SAP Easy Access menu.

Each promotion attribute type can have as many attributes as you like. For examples, the promotion attribute type "media support" could have the attributes TV, radio and Web. You specify promotion attributes on the Attributes tabstrip of the promotion planning screen, either by choosing an existing promotion attribute with F4 or by entering a new attribute. New promotion attributes are saved when you save promotion planning.

Length and Periodicity of a Promotion

You define the length of a promotion and the periods in which it is planned on the Promotion tabstrip of the promotion planning screen. In addition, you can further divide up the horizon of the promotion into an in-depot period, a buy-in period and an in-store period; these subdivisions are used only within promotion planning.

Promotion Key Figure and Baseline Forecast

On the Planning area tabstrip of the promotion planning screen, you attach the promotion key figure to its baseline forecast key figure. You also specify the planning area and version for which this pairing is valid.

Unit of Measure

In a later support package you will be able to plan promotions in a unit other than the base unit you defined in the planning area. The field Unit already exists on the Promotion tabstrip of the promotion planning screen. This function is not supported in the First Customer Shipment or in Support Package 1 of APO Release 3.0A.

Corrected Forecast

Promotions are no longer added to the corrected forecast key figure. If you wish to see the sum of the baseline forecast and promotions in interactive demand planning, you must define a key figure, write a macro that adds the forecasts together and saves them in it, and include the key figure in the planning area, planning book and planning view. This functionality was already available in a Release 2.0A service pack.

Release to Supply Network Planning

To release the combined forecast of baseline forecast and promotions to Supply Network Planning, you must define a key figure and write a macro that adds the forecasts together and saves them in it. It is this key figure that you release to Supply Network Planning. This functionality was already available in a Release 2.0A service pack.

Application Toolbar for Promotion Planning

You can use the icons in the Promotion Planning toolbar to:

  • Choose between:
  • A view in which you see only the promotion data

  • A view in which you also see the baseline forecast

  • A view in which you can evaluate the costs of the promotion and therefore estimate what the overall profit will be

  • Navigate between promotions
  • Show/hide a graphic of the current view settings are saved)
  • Show/hide the tabstrips
  • Drill down to the next characteristic
  • Drill up to the next characteristic
  • Remove the selected characteristics from promotion planning
  • Copy existing time series pattern to the selected row
  • Change the status of a promotion
  • Save the promotion
  • Send the promotion
  • Copy a promotion (at the time of writing, it is not certain that this function will be available with Support Package 1)

Fields in Univariate Forecast Profile

At the bottom of the univariate forecast profile you can make the following settings that affect how historical data is corrected to account for promotions:

  • Promotion
In this field you enter a key figure in which a past promotion or promotions are stored. History is corrected by the amount of the promotions.
  • Mark
If you check this box and if you have selected Outlier correction, the system marks all the periods within the horizon of the promotion in the past and performs outlier correction for these periods only. Any historical values that lie outside the tolerance lane are corrected.
  • Change values
If you check this box, the system corrects the historical data by deducting from it the promotions.
