APO-MD-PPE:IPPE Product Structure

Use

As well as the Product Variant Structure for displaying a BOM for configurable products and product families, the single-level BOM for non-configurable products in integrated Product and Process Engineering (iPPE) is available in the SAP Automotive Release 2.0 and the APO Release 3.0A (First Customer Shipment and Support Package 1). Both applications are mapped by the Product Structure function.

Product Class Hierarchy

In order to be able to use the product structure in iPPE and the configuration fully and to be able to use iPPE for platform strategies, it is necessary to create a product class hierarchy consisting of subordinate and superior classes with the related characteristics. The R/3 classification system is available for this in APO 3.0A.

For a product class hierarchy, you maintain a general superior class, to which characteristics are assigned that are the same for all products in the product family. You should maintain classes and their characteristics that are subordinate to these superior classes so that they contain the respective characteristics that describe only the products that are included in the subordinate classes. You should build the class hierarchy with the characteristics so that the characteristics and differentiations in the subordinate classes become ever more specific.

The class assignments are taken into account in the configuration and evaluated.

Objects in the Product Structure

You can structure your products with the following nodes:

  • view nodes (used, for example, to build user-specific views of the product),,
  • access nodes (represent the header of a product structure)
  • ,,,,,,component nodes (structure nodes) (represent functions in the product)
  • Variants:,,access variant (concrete characteristic of an access node)
  • ,,,,,,component variant (concrete characteristic of a component node)
  • Alternatives: alternatives at the access node (necessary for displaying alternative explosions of the product structure in different plants)
  • alternatives at the component node (also represents an alternative explosion)

Evaluation and Checking Tools

There are several tools for evaluations and checks available for the product structure in iPPE, which are described in the following.

When you maintain the product structure, the system automatically executes a recursiveness check; that means that the system checks whether a product includes itself as an element. You can also start this check manually.

In order to check the object dependencies that have been maintained and the attributes at the structure node, you can trigger a consistency check that indicates possible problems in a list of results. The consistency check also contains the variance schema, with which you can determine which characteristics are to be included in the consistency check.

You can use the prioritization function to override the selection of components using the object dependencies. You can also use it alongside the object dependencies to control the selection of components in the configuration. However, the characteristics planning does not take into account the prioritization and overrides it.

You can also execute a configuration simulation for your product in iPPE. For this, the system evaluates the characteristics that are available for this product, takes into account the indicator for standard variant at the structure node and then displays the corresponding product structure as a simulation.
