APO-PPS-MMP: Model Mix Planning

Use

You use this component for optimizing the order sequence in takted flow manufacturing.

In the automotive industry, configured vehicles are usually produced together on a takted production line. Using Model Mix Planning, you can determine an order sequence with start and end dates which fulfills certain business aims which, at the same time, takes restrictions and customers required delivery dates into account. These business aims include the following, for example:

  • To evenly distribute the production quantities over the takts on the line segments
  • To minimize the number of restriction violations
  • To minimize the absolute schedule deviation

Model Mix Planning is tailored to suit the high demands of the automotive industry and facilitates the planning of several thousand orders in only a few minutes.

Integration

  • Model Mix Planning is based on the master data from Line Design which is a part of the integrated Product and Process Engineering (iPPE). Therefore, you should only use Model Mix Planning in Release 3.0A along with the Discrete Industries System as an OLTP System.
  • In Model Mix Planning, scheduling is carried out using the information from Line Design as well as the line resources.
  • Following Model Mix Planning, you can execute a quick MRP run using the planning matrix or an individual explosion.
  • Using the Heuristics Framework, you can also integrate Model Mix Planning as a background process in the total planning run.
  • Using the Action Handler, you can transfer the planned order sequence to a subsystem.

Restrictions

Model Mix Planning is based on restrictions which you previously created as master data. You can define restrictions for characteristic values, characteristic value combinations and also for materials. Here, you usually refer to machine, personnel or material availability which you can represent using different restriction categories. The system differentiates between six restriction categories which you can use as necessary depending on your business requirements:

  • Quantity restrictions
Using this category, you can restrict the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values to a specific number per day or shift.
  • Spacing restrictions
Using this category, you can restrict the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values to a certain interval only.
  • Position restrictions
Using this category, you can restrict the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values to a certain partial sequence.
  • Block restrictions
Using this category, you can restrict the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values to certain blocks only.
  • K-in-M restrictions
Using this category, you can restrict the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values to a certain number in a partial quantity (interval) only.
  • Equal distribution
Using this category, you can equally distribute the occurrence of a particular combination of characteristic values over a certain shift or day.

You can group several restrictions into a restriction group with a validity period which you can assign to an APO planning version and a production line.

Model Mix Planning

You can carry out the actual planning as a background process in the Model Mix Planning run and in interactive Sequencing:

  • Model Mix Planning Run
Using the Model Mix Planning run, you can carry out an automatic planning run where, in several steps, you can plan different periods with various complex procedures. Here, you can combine the three procedures delivered in the standard system or you can also add your own procedures. You define the number and length of the periods as well as the procedures to be used as required This means in the long to middle-term periods, you can only create period slots while in the short-term period you can carry out complex sequencing taking all restrictions into account. Depending on your settings, the system only uses already existing planned orders or it can also convert sales orders and planned independent requirements into planned orders. You can also integrate this planning run into the Heuristics Framework.
  • Sequencing
You use Sequencing in the short-term period for displaying the orders in sequence along the time axis and for making any necessary changes. You can change the sequence manually or you can start an individual procedure. You can also display the restriction violations and the valuations of the orders.

Limitations

If you have defined line networks in iPPE Line Design, you can currently only execute Model Mix Planning for one of these lines. The sequence created here is then valid for all other lines in the network.
