APO-TP/VS: Transportation Planning and Vehicle Scheduling

Use

A new application component - Transportation Planning / Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) - has been developed for Release 3.0A (First Customer Shipment and Support Package 1). Transportation planning enables transportation planners to optimize the use of available capacity on trucks, trains, ships, and airplanes, with the dual objective of planning loading capacity more efficiently and reducing costs. This is imperative as most customers today rely completely on external companies to perform optimum transportation, in other words, it should be possible to perform the delivery punctually and as cheaply as possible.

The APO System includes the strategic, tactical, and operational planning area of the SAP transportation management solution. This solution is complemented by the SAP components of developed by Logistics Execution (LES) for the area of Transportation Planning.

TP/VS contains the following functionality:

  • Transportation planning and consolidation
  • Vehicle scheduling and route determination in a dynamic environment
  • Transportation mode and selection of carrier (TDL)
  • Multi-pick and multi-drop functionality
  • Alerts

Integration

The new Transportation Planning component means that the areas of TP/VS, global ATP, and Production Planning are particularly closely integrated within the APO System.

You plan deliveries and shipments within Transportation Planning. After you have released these in TP/VS, you can create them automatically in the Logistics Execution System.

To do this, you must perform settings in APO Customizing under Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO) Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) Interfaces.

Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) consists of the following components:

  • Planning Area: This includes the planning, current settings, and settings for the OLTP interface
In the SAP Easy Access Menu, choose Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling Planning or Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling Environment Current Settings or OLTP Interface to maintain the corresponding planning data
  • Master Data: Here you can maintain carrier data and cost data in Vehicle Scheduling
To do this, choose Master Data Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling Carrier or Master Data Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling Maintain Vehicle Scheduling Costs in the SAP menu.
  • Customizing: Here you perform the basic settings necessary for performing planning in TP/VS. Customizing consists of the following components: Basic Settings, Optimizer, Carrier Selection, and Interfaces. TP/VS Customizing also contains the components Scheduling and Backorder processing which are important for performing settings in Transportation Planning from global ATP.
To maintain these settings in the APO Implementation Guide, choose Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO) Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS).

Customizing

You perform the basic settings for this application component in the Customizing for Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling. To do so, choose Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO) Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) in the APO Implementation Guide .

TP/VS Customizing consists of the following components:

  • Basic Settings:
Here you perform settings for shipment number ranges and temporary shipments, transportation matrix, transportation-relevant hierarchies, freight units, transportation mode, and transportation group.
  • Optimizer:
Here you define dimensions and units, the optimization profile, vehicle/ vehicle group compatibility, as well as location/vehicle compatibility.
  • Carrier Selection:
You define the carrier profile here.
  • Interfaces:
Here you can determine the transportation category and maintain the mapping tables for vehicles.
  • Scheduling:
Here you perform interface and scheduling settings.
  • Backorder processing:
Here you maintain data with regard to filter types and sort profiles.

For more information, see the documentation on the Customizing activities listed above.

Master Data

Master data maintenance for the application component Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) is comprised of two parts, both of which you can maintain: Carrier and Vehicle Scheduling costs. To display master data maintenance, choose Master Data Master Data for Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling in the SAP APO menu.

  • Carrier:
Choose a carrier using the input help, and enter the necessary data (for example, detail specifications, location assignment, and connecting transportation) in the carrier maintenance screen.
  • Maintaining Costs for Vehicle Scheduling:
Here you create a cost profile for planning in Vehicle Scheduling. In addition to general data, this profile contains specifications regarding the location, transportation, dimension, and transportation lanes.

Planning

Here you perform planning after you have performed the necessary settings in Customizing and in the master data area.

  • Scheduling the Optimization Run: The optimization run aims to consolidate orders in cost-optimized shipments. In addition to scheduling a certain loading and unloading sequence for sales orders, you must also schedule onloading and offloading times as well as departure and arrival times. The system takes time frames, transportation capacity, and onloading and offloading capacities into account.
Further components of the optimization result include route determination and vehicle selection.
To do this, perform settings in APO Customizing under Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO) Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) Optimizer.
  • Selecting a Carrier: If you have completed transportation planning, the system selection a carrier. You can select from the following strategies:
Priority-based/Standard TDL
Share of business
Cost-based selection
Freight market (by means of Internet or EDI)

To do this, perform the necessary settings in APO Customizing under Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO) Transportation Planning/Vehicle Scheduling (TP/VS) Carrier Selection.
  • Interactive Vehicle Scheduling: The interactive scheduling function in Vehicle Scheduling offers you an overview of the scheduling already performed. You can perform changes to the scheduling proposed by the optimizer as well as to carrier selection here. You can also create and change shipments manually.
  • Collaborative Transportation Planning/Sending Planned Shipments by EDI: After the optimizer has selected the shipments and the carrier, a shipment is offered to the selected carrier by means of the Internet or EDI. The carrier can choose to accept or reject the shipment. If he chooses to accept, he can arrange the date and time of delivery with the ship-to party.
Alert: If the carrier rejects a shipment, an alert is generated in the APO System. You can then either select another carrier manually, or allow the optimizer to perform another automatic selection.

The Customizing activities that facilitate faster access are located in the planning area under Environment Current Settings.

You perform data maintenance for the interfaces for the integration model described above.
