Sequence-Dependent Setup Activities

Use

The setup logic has been changed in Release SCM 4.0 (Support Package 04). That is, the procedure the system uses to determine the sequence-dependent setup activities has changed. Therefore, the display of the sequence-dependent setup activities in the detailed scheduling planning board has also been updated accordingly.

The previous setup logic was based on the start dates of the setup activities. Now, the sequence of the operations on a resource is determined by the start dates of the processing activities. The system uses this sequence and the setup matrix to calculate the necessary setup activities and their duration. The system creates the setup activities with the corresponding duration. The advantage of this new procedure is that the sequence of the operations no longer change - even if an operation is given an earlier start date due to setup. This is because it is only the start date of the processing activities that is relevant for the sequence of the operations. This provides more stability in the planning situation.

The new setup logic is based on two principles:

  • The sequence of the operations is only based on the start dates of the processing activities. The setup activities are only of minor importance in planning.
  • The planning situation should only be changed as little as possible when rescheduling. If, for example, the predecessor of an operation changes, the operation should not be rescheduled if possible. Instead, only the setup time has to be recalculated.

The Display of the Sequence-Dependent Setup Activities in the Detailed Scheduling Planning Board has been changed as follows:

  • The sequence-dependent setup activities are shown as a narrow bar.
  • When moving an operation with a sequence-dependent setup activity, the phantom object is only determined using the activity types: process, teardown and queue time. The setup activity is not taken into account.
  • The display of the non-sequence-dependent setup activities remains unchanged.

Effects on Existing Data

The new setup logic is delivered with the SCM 4.0 Support Package 4.0. This does not influence the setup logic in your current system. The old setup logic will remain active until you convert your resources to the new setup logic using a conversion report. Information on the prerequisites and on how to create the conversion report is available in the Note 645719.

If you are working with an APO 4.0 (from SP4) for the first time, the system automatically uses the new setup logic.

Effects on Customizing

In Customizing for PP/DS, the following planning table profiles were changed to adjust the display of the setup activities to the new setup logic:

  • SAP001
  • SAP003
  • SAP006
  • SAP_PCM1
  • SAP_REM

In these planning table profiles, the graphic objects for the standard display of the operations, for deallocated operations and for fixed operations were copied and changed as follows:

  • To be able to display the sequence-dependent setup activities in the detailed scheduling planning board by a narrow bar, the hight was changed from 300 to 200 in the Setup graphic element.
  • So that when moving an operation in the detailed scheduling planning board, the setup activity is no longer a part of the phantom object, the indicator fix was set in the graphic element "setup".
  • In the charts where the operations are displayed in the diagram section (resource chart, operation chart, opeartions network view), the decision tables for the graphic objects were changed so that the changed graphic objects are used for an operation with sequence-dependent setup activities.

You have to adjust your existing planning table profiles accordingly if you use the new setup logic. For more information on how to do this, see the note 644295.
