PP/DS: Days' Supply Calculation

Scope of Functions

The production planner uses days' supply to see how long stock and receipts can cover requirements and forecasts so he/she can take action to avoid product shortages.

You are able to define exactly which categories of stock, receipts, requirements and forecast are to be included in the calculation of days' supply. This definition is referred to as a days' supply type, which you define in Customizing for Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling.

Days' supply is calculated for each pegging area. The system can calculate up to three different days' supply types automatically when you call up the Product View or the Alert Monitor.

By having more than one days' supply type, the planner can compare the effects different categories have on product availability and see whether any action is required.

An example of three different days' supply types could be that:

  • You take current stock and all requirements into account.
  • You take current stock, all requirements, and receipts that you are certain to receive into account, such as, for example, production orders or purchase orders.
  • You take all stock, requirements and receipts into account.

When defining the days' supply type, you can also define values for the minimum days' supply. These values you define are used to trigger alerts to warn the planner of potentialy critical situations regarding product availability. The values should allow you sufficient time to react to he problem to avoid a product shortage.

When calling up the Product View or the Alert Monitor, the days' supply is calculated and then compared to the values you have set for the minimum days' supply. As soon as the days' supply falls short of one of these values, an alert is created. The three values have a different priority assigned to them and each causes a different alert to be created (error, warning or info alert).

Effects on Customizing

For days' supply to be calculated, you must:

  1. Define days' supply type(s) in the IMG activity Maintain Days' Supply Types or you can use the standard days' supply types SAP1 and SAP2.
  2. Enter up to three days' supply types in the IMG activity Maintain Global Parameters and Defaults. If you do not enter the days' supply types here, they will not be calculated or displayed.

Further Information

For more information on the calculation of days' supply and the minimum days' supply, see the documentation for Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling.
