In this section you define your category structure. This contains category structure fields. You can freely define each category structure field.

You define a structure for your category that consists of quality and customer segment and which is named 001A. In this case 001 stands for the quality and A for the customer segment.

You create a category structure which at first remains blocked. After you have maintained the structure fields, you must block the category structure. This is a prerequisite for the maintenance of the stock and requirments categories and their assignment to your coverage strategy (compare maintain coverage strategies.

You can only unlock the structure if it has not been used. A structure is used if you have created at least one valid category for this structure or have maintained a conversion (compare maintain category assignment).

For each category structure field you must carry out the following settings:

  • The descrption of the category structure and the usage (requirements or stock category) are automatically assigned by the system when creating a new category structure field.
  • Definition of the sequence for structure fields.
This ranking is the prerequisite for how the system reads tables with placeholders (*).
  • Naming of the field
  • Check indicator
You specify whether valid values should be transferred from a Dictionary field (fixed values, value table, or check table) or whether they should be specified by a user-defined field.
  • Determination of the reference field to which you want to refer.
  • You have two options here:
You can refer to a field you have described in Maintain User-Defined Category Structure Fields
You can refer to a field from the SAP Dictionary.
  • Determination of the reference field that contains the explanatory text.
  • Field offset
Defines where the category fields are placed within the category structure. The fields are displayed in an optical help with their respective symbols and overlappings.
  • Field length
This is automatically transferred from the user-defined field or the dictionary field and cannot be changed.
  • Relevance of the category field for the EAN/UPC number assignment.
It might be that the field color is flagged as EAN/UPC. That means for each color of the product a separate EAN/UPC number is assigned. The field name must be unique for EAN-relevant fields. For non-EAN-relevant fields you must assign a different name.
  • Relevance of category structure fields in reference to their usage.

In general, referring to fields defined in Customizing is the more flexible solution because unlike the fields in the SAP Dictionary, you can freely define them. Dictionary fields require an environment with usable fixed values or a check table. To use a check table, you must define its key values.

Define the category structure for requirements and stocks.

Fields you use both in the structure of the requirements category and in the structure of the stock category are seen as related and get a capital letter as their symbol. Non-related fields get a small letter and an addition for stock or requirements category ('s' or 'r'). Changes to a field that is related to another field are automatically transferred to the related field.

You can also unlock your category structure if you delete all valid categories and conversions that refer to the structure using the coverage strategy.

To create a material with categories, you must assign the category structure to the material master in the view AFS Basic Data.

If you want to connect the R/3 system with a BW system, you can assign elementary fields to the category fields.
