The rank enables precise descriptions to be assigned to elements of the job index (individuals, positions, or budget structure elements) in the public sector. Thus the rank description Tax Inspector can be assigned to an employee in the Ministry of Finance, and the rank description Chief Superintendent can be assigned to an employee in the police force.

The correct rank description is determined based on a combination of the wage group valuation of an individual, position, or budget structure element, and organizational dimensions. If the available organizational dimensions Personnel Area/Personnel Subarea and Employee Subgroup/Employee Group are not suitable for determining the rank key, you define main groups and subgroups.

A decision tree, which evaluates the wage group valuation and organizational dimensions, is used to determine the valid rank key. This decision tree is called via a BAdI in which you can define whether the decision tree is to be evaluated based on a characteristic or the validation. In addition, you can use the BadI to include customer-specific fields in the decision tree.

In this IMG activity, you create an alphanumeric rank key. You can create male and female descriptions so that the rank description is gender-specific for individuals. Neutral descriptions are used for positions and budget structure elements. If only the neutral description exists, this is also used for all individuals.

If a rank description changes over the course of time, you create the new description for the rank key and delimit the entry for the required date
