In this step, you can add your own ID code types to those already provided in the system.

  1. Find out which additional ID code types your company requires.
  2. To create the required ID code types, please proceed as follows:
    1. Specify an alphanumeric key of up to 4 characters.
    2. Assign each ID code type a descriptive text.
    3. Specify whether a media product master record can be assigned several ID codes of this type.
    4. Specify whether ID codes of this type can be used several times.
    5. Specify whether ID codes of this type must be in ID code areas and number ranges.
    6. Specify whether or not the ID code only contains numbers.
    7. Specify whether or not ID codes of this type have a check digit.
    8. Define the length of the ID codes of this type.
    9. Define the separator symbol.
    10. Specify the number of separator symbols in ID codes of this type.
    11. Specify whether ID codes of this type have a separator between the ID code area and number and/or between the ID and check digit.
    12. Specify which individual search helps are to be provided for ID codes of this type.

The books published by your company and recorded as media product master records are to be assigned an ISBN (International Standard Book Number). An ID code type 'ISBN' is set up for this purpose.

  • Since the last digit in the ISBN is a check digit, select the indicator 'Check digit exists' and assign the check digit algorithm for ISBN.
  • The ISBN comprises 9 digits, the check digit and 3 separator symbols, if applicable. You should therefore specify the value '10' as the length including the check digit.
  • If you want to place a separator symbol in the ID code after the country code and the publisher code and before the check digit, specify '3' as the number of separator symbols and select the indicators 'Separator between ID code area and number' and 'Separator between ID and check digit'. The separator symbol between the country code and the publisher code is part of the ID code area.
  • You can specify whether or not a media product master record can be assigned several ISBN numbers. Although this is unusual, it may be desirable in some exceptional cases. However, you should check whether the ISBN numbers have different semantic meanings, in which case it is advisable to use different ISBN categories for them.
  • It is normally advisable to have the system check the ISBN for existing assignments to other media product master records. In this case, you specify a multiple usage type to determine the sub-tree in the media product master hierarchy in which an ISBN can be used more than once. The multiple usage type also allows you to specify that an ISBN cannot be assigned to several media issues.
  • You can also specify which ISBN numbers can be proposed in the search help for the ID code. In most cases, you will want the system to propose the next free ISBN number for an ID code area and number range, but you may also want to display a list of free ISBN numbers and a list of the numbers already in use. If you allow more than one proposal option, the user can choose which one they want.
