Advice needed for sizing...

Joan,

There are sizing tables for the iSeries based on the SAP benchmark but they
are really useful only for the initial sizing or when you are adding an
entirely new capability. Becuaes they are based on the benchmark , which
assumes a 'standard' user, real results on a real system are much better.

For example, an 830 4 way is rated at about 1100 SAPs which translates to
about 100 'standard' SD users, or 550 FI users. This assumes medium
activity per user ( hitting the keyboard every 30 seconds).

But what is a 'standard' user? The iseries performance measurements, SAP
performance measurements, and an SAP early watch are really the best ways
to start investigating a performance issue: Then you decide whether, after
the SAP and custom code applications have been tuned, you need to add
resource.

Your upgrade choices on an 830 - 4way would be :

!.Upgrade to an 8 way
2. Add application servers ( 270 -2434 2 way, or 820 -0152 4 way)
3. Migrate to the new GLS version and add Windows 2000 application
servers or OS/400 application servers. ( We are currently testing
integrated W2K cards in an iSeries as an application server, and initial
results arre quite promising). You would have to migrate from 4.6C ( the
only common version for the EBCDIC version and the GLS(ASCII) version).
As this migration just changes from EBCDIC to ASCII , it is less complex
than a standard SAP migration.

I hope this helps.

SAP on System i

Hi All,

We're running SAP R/3 4.6B on AS/400, and our server is 9406-830, 4
CPU's, ( CPU char. 23D1, 2402 ) with 12 GBytes of main memory and
400GB in ASP.

We've actually 350 users online, with an average of 30.000 dialog
steps per hour, and we've performance problems. And we plan to have
more users in next months. Now, we're doing an analysis an
preliminary results show a CPU bottleneck basically ( there are other
issues... ).

We're planning a hdw upgrade to solve this but we want to know which
options we have. Exists any sizing table for iSeries ? Exists any way
to get an overview about sizing ?

We now that SAP provides the Quick Sizer in the SAP Marketplace, but
we need a quick answer and the QS provides a good result with good
data and we don't have time to collect it.

Best regards,
Joan B. Altadill
