How to change i-Series system serial number?

This is an IBM site in Sterling Forrest, and IBM has a 'policy' against
changing serial numbers on DR equipment .
Although Third Party vendor software is not 'active' on your home system
due to your home system being
swept away in a flood, and the DR system being the only active AS/400 with
this unique serial number IBM still has
a policy against changing the serial number on the DR system.

Recently our model-840 (V5R1) arrived in our Corporate Data Center and it
shared the same serial number (MES upgrade) as our model-730 which
continued to run in a production capacity - so it is possible to change the
serial number
at V5R1. IBM just has a 'policy' against doing this.

IF IBM changed their internal policy THEN the following scenario would not
play out during a real DR incident:

The scenario would be , your company 'home' system is down and you send
your latest backup tapes from ARCUS
to IBM in Sterling Forrest NY . You and your team jump on a place and head
out to the IBM DR site, and maybe IBM is able to give you the serial number
of the DR AS/400 prior to your arrival or more likely you receive the
serial number
upon arrival in NY.

Where the fun starts - you frantically start contacting all of your third
party software vendors begging for a temp. key
to activate their software (ie JDE, CSC, etc..). Of course your planning
has included a voluminous contact list and instructions and prior
agreements with ALL of your vendors concerning the issuance of a temp.
activation key
for your DR.

End result is that in the event of a true DR 'incident' you are sitting on
your DR system with half of your software
not enabled to be activated due to back office issues due to your company
not being current on invoices, or the
Third Party staff member who handles activation keys is on vacation, or the
temp. key just will not work, etc.... .

May I ask where you are doing this DR test? If you aren't using your
own equipment, I would highly consult with the people who own the machine.

If you are able to change it, you will be responsible for any repercussions
that may result with the machine.

The chances are that you will not be able to change it with the more
current OS/400 operating systems.

Bernd,

Thanks! This seems like just the resource I am looking for. I am having a
problem getting to this site, do you know if there
are issues with the site being down (....could just be my company network).

Have you actually used the technique/program(s) mentioned in the chapter?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi, You might be interested in Leif's "AS/400 Machine-Level Programming"
which has a chapter on changing the serial number. Of course one shouldn't
play around with this, especially on a production server. Apart from that
the book has some very interesting as/400 information and rare
documentation
on MI programming.
The link: http://iseries400.org/index.htm

Best,
Bernd
