The IOP utilization due to polling SDLC communications lines can cause the total IOP utilization to be above the guideline. This is normal and acceptable because as the IOP becomes busy transferring data, the IOP utilization due to polling decreases. In some cases, the utilization will go down as more data is transferred.
However, if the utilization due to data transfer is above the guideline, performance in terms of response time and throughput will degrade. Unfortunately, it is impossible to calculate the utilization due to polling or the utilization due to data transfer.
Therefore (since SDLC lines are configured on this IOP), if the performance is unacceptable, you should isolate other possible causes of the poor performance (communications errors or high line, cpu, and disk utilizations, for example). If no other cause is found, then the problem MAY be the high IOP utilization. If the SDLC lines are busy, then the utilization due to polling will be low, and the high CIOP utilization probably should be lowered. If the SDLC lines are not busy, then the utilization due to polling will be high, and the high CIOP utilization may not be a problem.
