Seek length is the percentage of the disk that the read/write head has to travel from the current cylinder to the cylinder that has the data being read/written, and is a major portion of the disk time. Long seek lengths cause increased response times. System algorithms are used to minimize this distance when possible.
Long seek lengths can be caused by a job mix that includes large blocks of sequential reads and concurrent random reads and writes. Long seeks can also be caused by internal error recovery occurring on the arm. If this is the case, then messages in the QSYSOPR message queue may provide more details.
If this message refers to the load source device (disk arm 001) then this message may be disregarded.
When long seeks are caused by sequential and random read/write conflicts and throughput needs to be improved, you can either reschedule your work load if the offending jobs are known or you can use Start the Performance Explorer (STRPEX) to analyze which objects are being accessed so that they can be separated.
