Purpose

You use this report to compare the totals of the valuated stocks from the material masters against the totals of the assigned balance sheet accounts in a ledger in General Ledger Accounting.

If the material ledger is activated for a valuation area, the report determines the material stocks from the material ledger. If the material ledger is not activated, the report determines the material stocks directly from Materials Management. The stocks compromise the following stock types:

  • Material Stock Valuation
  • Order Balance Valuation
  • Project Balance Valuation
  • Subcontracting Balance Valuation

Other than the balance sheet accounts in the general ledger, the report also determines the assigned G/L account assignments, provided that they have been activated in the ledger. The balances are compared at the account assignment level.

You can run the analysis for the following G/L account assignments:

  • Business area
  • Profit center
  • Segment

Analysis is only possible when General Ledger Accounting and Materials Management share the same the periods; the start date and end date of the posting periods need to be the same in Materials Management and in General Ledger Accounting.

Note

A G/L account assignment must be uniquely assigned to a material stock. In the case of a variable assignment, such as when different segments are used for a profit center, a comparison for such a G/L account assignment would not produce any valid results.

Note

The report requires the standard logic for deriving G/L account assignments to be applied in the case of postings in special stock as per SAP Note 530578. With this logic, postings are made to the profit center or the business area of the material in stock items and offsetting items until goods issue for delivery to the customer. For this reason, ensure that the solutions described in the SAP Note are implemented.

You can add additional G/L account assignments for the evaluation: For this, use the Business Add-In (BAdI) FAGL_MM_RECON in Customizing for Financial Accounting under General Ledger Accounting -> Tools -> Customer Enhancements -> Business Add-Ins (BAdIs) -> Master Data Enhancement for Balance Reconciliation Between General Ledger and Materials Management. Note the prerequisites for insertable G/L account assignments described in the BAdI documentation.

You can also run the report for periods occurring in the past. However, the report always applies the current assignments for the master data (such as the profit center assignment in the material master). If changes have been made to the master data assignments between the time when the period was analyzed and the time when the analysis is run, the report might output differences that did not actually exist at the time when the period was analyzed. We therefore recommend using the log function to save the analysis before reorganizing account assignments and analyzing past periods using the logs thus saved.

Recommendation

We recommend starting this report at regular intervals, such as at month-end or year-end.

Integration

When performing the analysis, the report does not lock the materials. The system continues to update stock values and quantities and to make postings to the checked G/L accounts. For this reason, the report might output differences even when there are no inconsistencies in the system.

Prerequisites

To be able to run the report and to display the results, you need to have the following authorizations:

  • Accounting Document: Authorization for Company Codes
  • Accounting Document: Display Authorization for G/L Accounts
  • General Ledger Accounting: Display Authorization for Ledgers

Depending on the components that are activated in a ledger, you additionally need to have the following authorizations:

  • Accounting Document: Display Authorization for Business Areas
  • General Ledger Accounting: Display Authorization for Segments
  • Authorization Check on Area of Responsibility (Profit Center)

Features

Selection

  • Company Code
Specify the company code for which you want to run the report.
  • Fiscal Year
Specify the fiscal year of the posting period in Materials Management for which you want to run the report.
  • Posting Period
Specify the posting period in Materials Management for which you want to run the report.
If the material ledger is not activated, you can only run the report for the following periods:
  • Current posting period

  • Previous posting period

  • Last posting period of the previous year

If the material ledger is activated in all valuation areas of the specified company code, you can select any posting period.
  • Ledger
Special the ledger in General Ledger Accounting for which you would like to determine the balances. The report only valuates the balance-relevant G/L account assignments that are activated in that ledger.
In the analysis for the stocks in the material ledger, only currencies activated in this ledger are relevant for the comparison.
  • G/L Account
You can restrict the analysis to individual G/L accounts or ranges of G/L accounts.
  • Log Parameters
You can output the log immediately or save it for output at a later date. In this way, you can select the "Save Log" option, for example, when running the report in the background. You use the Logs pushbutton to display saved logs at a later point in time and to analyze them interactively.
  • Parallel Execution
To improve system performance, you can distribute the workload internally across multiple parallel processes.
However, it is only useful to use parallel execution if a large amount of the materials in the system are used in the selected company code.

Standard Variants

Output

In the SAP List Viewer, the report shows the analysis result at the balance sheet account level and at the level of the G/L account assignments activated in the ledger.

By double-clicking one of the totals determined, you can navigate to a detail list:

  • Material Total: Navigation to a list of the individual materials. From here, you can navigate to the report Display Material (which displays the relevant material master data).
  • General Ledger Total: Navigation to the report G/L Account Balance Display (which displays the balance on the balance sheet account)

Note

If you run the evaluation in a stored log, you navigate to the reports Display Material, Material Price Analysis, and G/L Account Balance Display for the current point in time. In this case, the stock displayed in the material master data, for example, does not match the stock displayed in the report.

Activities

To call this report, go to the SAP Easy Access menu and choose Accounting -> Financial Accounting -> General Ledger -> Periodic Processing -> Closing -> Check/Count -> Balance Comparison: General Ledger - Materials Management.
