Starting the Analysis Program for Archiving

The analysis program checks which data for an archiving object can be archived.

The setting for the analysis mode determines which data records are included in the check. You make this setting in IMG activity Maintain Global Archiving Control.

A data record (including all dependent table entries that, together with the data record, form a business-related unit) can be archived if it meets the following conditions:

  • The residence time of the data has expired.
  • The data is no longer required from a business-related viewpoint.
For more information, see the Business Prerequisites section.

If a data record can be archived, the analysis program sets the archivability status of this data record to Archivable. If a data record cannot be archived, its archivability status is set to Not Archivable and the resubmission date of the data record is recalculated in accordance with the Customizing settings.

For more information, see the Analysis Program section in the SAP Library.

To improve performance, the analysis program uses parallel processing. This means that it divides the analysis process into multiple subprocesses that run asynchronously and are processed in parallel as jobs.

During processing, the analysis program generates an application log containing statistical data, and writes the current status in an activity log. You can use the archiving monitor to display these logs, and to see how archiving is progressing.

Before you can use the analysis program, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • You are authorized for archiving. For more information about authorization, see the section Basic Settings -> Authorizations in the Implementation Guide.
  • You have imported the Customizing entry supplied by SAP for this archiving object to this client in activity Maintain Global Archiving Control, and adjusted it to your company's requirements.
  • You have made the object-specific (residence time) Customizing settings for your archiving object. You can ensure these are correct and complete using IMG activity Check Customizing for Archiving.
If there is no suitable entry for a particular data record in the object-specific Customizing settings, the system uses the global residence time set in IMG activity Maintain Global Archiving Control.
  • If you want to run the analysis program as a parallel process, you need to enter the analysis application type of your archiving object in IMG activity Maintain Job Distribution. If you do not do this, the system runs the analysis sequentially.
  • If you want to run the analysis program in parallel processing with a package formation profile generated beforehand, you need to implement a suitable procedure for forming package profiles. This method must be a function module. You also need to make an appropriate entry in IMG activity Global Archiving Control: Package Formation Procedure.
You can then generate the profile formation using the pre-step program for the archiving object, and save it in the database to be reused.

Notes

The check as to whether the correspondence data can be archived takes place within the write program. This means that you do not have call up a separate program to check and analyze the data.
