Purpose

For SAP MaxDB database, you need to specify two users, to allow communication between various SAP systems. First the standard database user and second the database manager (DBM) operator.

To administer the database, requests must be made from the SAP system to the DBM server. In this case, the communication takes place by means of the Database Manager operator (DBM operator). The storage of the DBM operator data in the SAP system can be either centralized or decentralized. SAP recommends that you store user data centrally. Note that DBM operators are not database users. They can neither change data in the database nor log on to query tools or the Loader. The user data for the DBM operator is stored in the table DBCONUSR in the SAP system.

The standard database user is used for SQL queries (Native SQL) to the database. Database users can change data in the database using query tools, database applications, or SQL statements. They can create and change database objects such as tables, views, and indexes. Note that database users cannot carry out administration tasks for which a DBM server logon is required. The user data for the standard database user is stored in the table DBCON.

Execution

  • Specify the DBM operator and password. The default name for this user in a SAP system is CONTROL.
  • Specify the standard database user and password. The SAP system connects to the database as database user SAP or SAPR3 (older systems), where is the SAP system ID.

Note that the user data for DBM operator and standard database user in the SAP system must match to the user data of the database.

You can alternatively create and change the names and the passwords for the DBM operator and the standard database user using the transaction Display/Change Integration Data (transaction DB11).
