slightly off topic: Sapgui 46D rollout

Just heard an update from our Network Admin group yesterday....
They are very pleased with the preliminary testing on using the new tools & were
in the process of trying to obtain "SAPsweep" from Sapserv also.

During our 4.6C upgrade project, it has been basically "impossible" to get our
Network Team to respond to the need to patch the 4.6D GUI. We have been testing
with patch lvl 80 which I don't recall whether it was compilation 1;2;or 3.
We have roughly 20 PCS & laptops which are used by the upgrade/testing team. In
the past, they created a Novell "distribution package" which also required the
end-user to delete the older version of the GUI prior to installing the new
version. Our netword admin group has made it sound like this EFFORT TOOK WEEKS
TO ACCOMPLISH.

I don't want to be insensitive here, but considering that we must keep current
with PTF'S, CUME PACKAGES, DB FIX PACKS, KERNEL PATCHS, & SUPPORT PACKAGES; why
should the GUI be "allowed" to remain behind & static? Our 3 year-old 3.1H live
SAP environment has had a static GUI; It looks to me that with as the GUI
becomes more sophisticated (4.6D) that there will be demand to created a
feasible maintenance/patch routine.

Ok, getting down from my podium; Our network admin group is trying to assess the
best way to use SAP's new GUI distribution tools. We have approx 500 pcs local;
120 pcs & laptop remote (all over the country); & 3 European locations (France,
Holland, UK) of which they are working thru defining a rollout/upgrade
methodolgy. I can update when they get further.

Thanks
Doreen

Subject: slightly off topic: Sapgui 46D rollout

Hello!

I've studied the new netinstall/netsetup stuff with packages etc... for
sapgui 46D rollout, but not yet tried implementing.
We are looking for some feedback on this new process/methods, for example:

- approximate time needed to prepare/test the install server, packages, test
workstations..
- rate of reliability of the automatic upgrade procedure (Intellimode)?
- is it possible to install totally remotely without any user action on the
workstation?
- is it possible to use the packages on a specially prepared cd (to avoid
answering questions) but without a netinstall server?
- and so on...

Any feedback on a real rollout with this new tool is welcome 🙂
Thanks.

Thierry.
