The critical issue will be the change in release levels with SAP. If you
are on 3.1 now, 4.6 will have a large impact.
Interestingly, here are some numbers that may help in guidance:
S30 -2 way CPW = 583, Software group = P20
S30 -4 way CPW = 998, P20
S30 - 8 way , 1794, P30
270 - 2way, 1950(!!) P20
So a 270 will have more performance, lower software costs (and
incidentally, lower memory costs), lower maintenance than an 830 8 way.
However, it is limited in the number of disk arms ( 24 x 17Gb arms) and
upgradeability compared to the other 8xx models. The faster processors will
have also an impact - making individual transactions appreciably faster
than a system with the same CPW across more processors ( eg, 720 4 way, S30
8 way).
You need more memory for later SAP releases as well - Disk arm requirements
and space requirements go up, but not as much as CPU and memory.
There have been several notes on the extra disk needed with later SAP
releases, they seem to indicate anywhere from 10 to 30% more disk is
required (if my memory serves me correctly) going from 3.1 to 4.6.

We currently have a 9406 s30 with 1 gig ram, and 192 gig dasd (raid 5).
This is our DEV box.
How long do you think it will last as far as a useable box for DEV for SAP?
1 maybe 2 years?
Any ideas?
