R3 40B and Kernel 802/811

Hello Rick!
Thanks for the flowers.

My statement about the kernels was not complete.
I did not look at the current contents... Mea culpa.

Here's some more:

About the COM-Kernel:
OSS Note 102461
(https://www003.sap-ag.de/~IRON/FM/011000358700000431401997/0102461E)
says:
"Our database partners have announced that they will
not continue to maintain DB client libraries up to 2003.
SAP has been using these client libraries in the previous
versions of SAP kernel 40B since May 1998. As a result,
SAP has decided to deliver a new SAP kernel which is called
version 40B_COM."
There seems also to be a 3.1i_COM kernel. (OSS note 102445)

My interpretation: If you are on V4R4 or V4R5, you should
consider to switch to the _COM kernel.

I looked into the download area:
4.0b for V4R1: current 811, no 749, old kernels: 714, 657, 584, 513
4.0b_COM for V4R4: NO patches.

Another mistery for SAP to clarify!?
My interpretation: Keep considering using _COM until there is clear
information about it.

Kind regards
Rudi

Hi Rudi,

Have I thanked you lately for getting this list going? Also, thanks for the
info about the special kernel. However your comment about only the most
current is not quite true. Only the most current is called kernel but there
are also kernel_749, etc. there since you have to install them sequentially.
I would also be interested in the benefits of 40b_com. Will it help the
migration to 4.6? Does it work better with v4r5? I know those of us v4r4 and
lower will have to go to r5 but all the comments, questions related to v4r5
on this forum make me a little nervous.

Rick

Hi!

You will always see only the most current kernel
SAP has put on the Marketplace.

802 is a special kernel level for 4.0b.
Is is delivered as a complete kernel on CD.
And it is the basis for subsequent kernel patches.
See OSS note 49365.

Question (for Volker?) regarding 49365:
On the CD there is a V4R4 compiled kernel 40b_COM.
What benefits can we expect on a V4R4 or V4R5 system
from this kernel?

Kind regards
Rudi

As a rule, if I'm on SAP MarketPlace and there is a more current kernel
available, I pull it down. At some point I acquired a Kernel patch 802 for
release 40B. Last Friday, I was visiting and found Kernel 811 but 802 was no
longer there. Does anyone know if 802 is valid or necessary?
