Forcing DB2/400 to use an index ?

Hello Jim!

I DID see locks on the *SQLPKG objects.
But you have to find them using the statement name in the right library.
And the package name differs from the table name...
And there are several packagages per table in different libraries...

Kind regards
Rudi

Rudi: I'm just getting back from vacation and catching up with my email.

Please note that in the past, locks didn't show on the SQL package. I know
because I used your logic about 4:30 one Friday afternoon and spent about 2
hours fixing it. The lock was on the table, not the SQL package. When I
deleted the SQL package, suddenly the work processes that had the file open
lost their access to it. I tracked down each work process and restarted it,
which forced a rebuild of the SQL package.

If there are no locks on the file, the SQL package can be deleted safely.
If there are only one or two locks, the work process can be restarted, which
will close the file and release the lock. You risk cancelling someone's
task, but if the system isn't busy, you should be OK.

Hi SAPlings!

According to my recent experiences and this discussion
I just decided the following:

When I have to fight a DB performance problem, I will
1. Look at the optimizers decision
2. Identify the *SQLPKG involved
3. WrkObjLck <lib>/<package> *SQLPKG
4. Wait for the package to be free of locks
or force this by restarting the locking WPs
5. DltSQLPkg <lib>/<package>
Note: This has been ONE SINGLE SQLPKG and this is really
no state affair
6. Look if the optimizer makes a different decision now
after R/3 has rebuilt the package
7. Proceed with normal DB optimization procedures

BTW: Does anyone know how to gracefully restart a WP
when the system is busy so that noone gets harmed
by the "look-klick-delay" for the restart?

Kind regards
Rudi
