LUG

A little while ago, I initiated a discussion on forming an SAP Large Users
group. In looking at the different alternatives out there it looks like
the existing user groups may be able to answer the special requirements of
the iSeries SAP large customer group better than forming a new user group.
One option is the iSeries Large Users Group or LUG.

Thiis open to any customer who has over 10,000 CPW on four or fewer AS/400
or iSeries machines

Within the LUG there are beginnings of "Special Interest Groups" already.
Specifically, there are quite a few customers who have unique interests in
applications like SAP. These groups have met in the evenings during LUG
week to discuss these various situations.

There probably is room within the LUG to have focus areas such as SAP. I
think that large SAP customers probably could join the LUG and learn
quite a bit from it, as well as form good relationships with others who run
SAP.

The LUG does have a web site where they share ideas and discussions. The
site is invaluable, but is not a substitute for the face to face meetings.
In fact, the LUG bylaws specify that meeting attendance is mandatory. The
board has enforced that rule in the past, terminating membership for those
who do not come to meetings. We have regular attendance from companies in
Hong Kong, the UK, and Poland. They have all found it worth the travel
time.

Members are asked to actively participate in meetings. They are asked to
initiate requirements on the product, own and track requirements, and
participate in the discussions at LUG. Confidential information is shared
at the meetings so members are asked to maintain that confidentiality. Each
company signs a comprehensive nondisclosure agreement with IBM before they
are allowed to attend meetings or gain access to the web site.

To join, a company simply calls the LUG board to discuss membership. The
membership person will ask about CPW, contact names, what kind of
applications run on the systems, etc. Then the board votes, and membership
is given the opportunity to reject based on non-compete reasons. (which has
never been exercised that I know of).

I have posted a presentation about the LUG on the web site.
