AS400 backing up NT

Gary,
There are several methods of doing this that I know of.

The most obvious is to use the new integrated capabilities of the xSeries
to take all the disk out of the xseries NT system and use disk on the
iSeries instead. However, you need the special cards in the xSeries and
the iSeries to do this, and many do not have this capability on their
current systems, or possibly have non IBM NT servers (how could this
be??!).

I think one of the best ways to do this is to use a storage management
package that runs on the iSeries. The one I know best is called Tivoli
Storage Manager (TSM) and used to be called ADSM. It has a client that
goes on each system and is managed by the iSeries (or another NT system, or
an AIX system, or Solaris, or HP-UX or OS/390 (sorry zOS) etc.) It does
not requirethe full Tivoli 'base' software to work (expensive) but is a
standalone product.

We use this in IBM Canada to back up all our personal PCs across our
normal network. If it was a large scale backup every night, you might need
a dedicated network to handle the load, or build a strategy of backing up
only changes ( this is the IBM strategy).

Finally, of course, a Storage Area Network like IBMs ESS can use the same
or similar software to do the same thing with the advantage that the tape
drive and all systems are already in the same high speed network.
